The Communication Ducking
Windows 11 includes a feature designed to make VoIP calls and video conferencing easier to manage. If the operating system detects incoming or outgoing communication activity (like a Skype call, a Zoom meeting starting, or a Microsoft Teams notification), it automatically “ducks” or pauses the volume of other applications. While helpful in an office setting, this is incredibly annoying if you use a communication app (like Discord) in the background while listening to Spotify or playing a game. Every time a friend joins your voice channel or sends a notification ping, Windows abruptly cuts the volume of your music by 80%, completely ruining your listening experience.
Disabling Volume Ducking
To retain full control over your audio mix and stop Windows 11 from automatically pausing or lowering your music volume during communications, you must disable the auto-ducking feature in the classic sound control panel.
Press the Windows Key, type Change system sounds, and hit Enter. This will bypass the modern Settings app and open the legacy “Sound” Control Panel. At the top of this window, click the tab labelled Communications. You will see a prompt that reads: “When Windows detects communications activity:” followed by several radio button options. By default, it is usually set to “Reduce the volume of other sounds by 80%”. Select the bottom option: Do nothing. Click Apply, then click OK. Windows will no longer interfere with your media volume, allowing your music to play at full strength regardless of what communication apps are running in the background.
