How to Change the Language in Google Chrome

Whether you prefer browsing in your native language, are learning a new language and want your browser to reinforce it, or accidentally changed Chrome to a language you cannot read, Google Chrome allows you to change its display language at any time. This setting affects all of Chrome’s menus, toolbars, settings pages, and system dialogs. Separately, Chrome also lets you configure which languages websites should present their content in, giving you fine-grained control over your multilingual browsing experience.

How to Change the Browser Language on Windows

On Windows, Chrome maintains its own language setting independently from the Windows system language.

1. Open Google Chrome on your computer.
2. Click the three vertical dots (⋮) in the top-right corner of the window to open the menu.
3. Select Settings from the dropdown.
4. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Languages.
5. Under the “Preferred languages” section, look for your desired language. If it is already listed, proceed to the next step. If not, click the blue Add languages button, search for your language by name, check its checkbox, and click Add.
6. Once your desired language appears in the list, click the three dots (⋮) icon next to that language.
7. Check the box labelled “Display Google Chrome in this language.”
8. A Relaunch button will appear next to the language entry. Click it. Chrome will restart and all interface text will immediately display in your chosen language.

How to Change the Browser Language on Mac

On macOS, Chrome follows the system language setting rather than managing its own. To change Chrome’s language on a Mac:

1. Go to System Settings > General > Language & Region.
2. Click Add Language… and select your preferred language.
3. Choose to use it as your primary system language.
4. Restart your Mac. Chrome (and all other apps) will now display in the selected language.

How to Change the Language on Android

1. Open the Chrome app on your Android smartphone or tablet.
2. Tap the three dots (⋮) in the top-right corner and select Settings.
3. Scroll down and tap Languages.
4. Under the “Chrome’s language” heading, tap the current language listed there.
5. Select your desired language from the list. Chrome will download the relevant language pack and prompt you to restart the app to apply the change.

Changing Website Language Preferences

Separately from the browser interface language, you can also set which language you want websites to display their content in. Many sites (such as news sites, e-commerce stores, and Wikipedia) automatically detect your browser’s language preference and serve content accordingly.

1. Go to Settings > Languages on Chrome for desktop.
2. Under the “Preferred languages” section, add and rank your preferred languages using the three-dot menu next to each one. Drag them into order of preference.
3. Chrome sends this ranked list to every website you visit as part of the HTTP request headers. Sites that support multiple languages will serve your highest-ranked available language.
