The Presumptive Dropdown
Google Chrome features a robust Autofill system designed to save you time during online checkouts or account registrations. When you click on a text field (like “First Name” or “Shipping Address”), Chrome scans the page, identifies the form type, and immediately presents a dropdown menu suggesting your previously saved personal information. While convenient, this aggressive suggestion behavior can be intrusive. The dropdown menu often obscures other parts of the form, and if you share your computer or are screen-sharing during a presentation, you might not want your personal home address and phone number automatically flashing on the screen every time you click a text box.
Disabling Address Autofill in Settings
To keep your personal information hidden until you explicitly need it and stop Google Chrome from automatically selecting forms and presenting address suggestions, you must disable the address saving feature.
Open Google Chrome. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner to open the main menu, and select Settings. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Autofill and passwords (or just “Autofill” depending on your version). In the main window, click on Addresses and more. Look at the top toggle switch labeled Save and fill addresses. Click this toggle to switch it to the Off position (it will turn grey). From now on, clicking into a form field will no longer trigger the automatic dropdown menu containing your saved personal details, allowing you to manually type your information without visual interference.
