The Desktop Clutter
Google Chrome features a robust system for turning websites into “Progressive Web Apps” (PWAs). When you install a PWA (like Twitter, YouTube, or Spotify) through Chrome, the browser attempts to integrate it seamlessly into your operating system. By default, upon installation, Chrome automatically creates a shortcut icon and places it directly on your desktop (and often pins it to your taskbar or dock). If you are simply installing a web app to use it occasionally in a dedicated window, having Chrome constantly cluttering your pristine desktop with new icons is an unwanted intrusion.
Preventing Shortcut Creation
To maintain a clean workspace and stop Google Chrome from automatically adding desktop shortcuts when you install a web app, you must carefully uncheck the option during the installation process.
Unlike many other browser behaviors, there is no global “never create shortcuts” toggle in Chrome’s main settings menu. You must manage this per application. When you navigate to a site that supports PWA installation, you usually click the small “Install” icon in the right side of the address bar. A small pop-up dialogue box appears confirming the installation. On Windows and Linux, this box often includes a checkbox labelled Create desktop shortcut (or similar wording depending on the OS version). You must uncheck this box before you click the final blue “Install” button. If the app is already installed, you can simply delete the icon from your desktop manually; deleting the shortcut does not uninstall the underlying Chrome web app.
