When you use Google Keep to manage a massive, ongoing task list (like a weekly grocery shopping list or a month-long project tracker), checking items off one by one can quickly clutter the screen. By default, completed items instantly cross themselves out and move to the bottom of the list. However, if you check off 50 items, that massive graveyard of crossed-out text makes it incredibly annoying to scroll down and find the bottom of the note. To keep your workspace perfectly clean, you can instruct Google Keep to automatically hide all completed items.
How to Hide Completed Items on Mobile
If you are using the Google Keep app on an iOS or Android smartphone, you can instantly collapse the graveyard of completed tasks.
- Open the Google Keep app and tap your list to open it.
- Scroll down past your active, unchecked tasks until you see the gray divider line labeled “X Completed items” (e.g., “12 Completed items”).
- Tap the small Up Arrow located directly to the right of the “Completed items” text.
The entire block of crossed-out tasks will instantly collapse into a single, compact row. All 12 items still exist, but they are completely hidden from view, freeing up massive amounts of vertical screen real estate. To view them again, simply tap the Down Arrow to expand the list.
How to Hide Completed Items on Desktop Web
The desktop web browser version of Google Keep provides an even faster, more automated way to manage completed checklists. You can configure the global settings to permanently collapse completed items by default across all notes.
- Navigate to keep.google.com.
- Look at the top-right corner of the dashboard (near your profile picture) and click the Settings (Gear) icon.
- From the drop-down menu, click Settings.
- A pop-up window will appear. Look for the toggle switch labeled “Move checked items to bottom”.
- If you toggle this switch OFF, checked items will simply cross out and remain exactly where they are in the list.
- If you toggle it ON, they will instantly jump to the bottom and nestle under the “Completed items” accordion.
Once nested, simply click the small arrow next to the “Completed items” header to collapse the entire section. Google Keep will remember this preference, ensuring that every time you open a massive checklist, the crossed-out clutter remains safely hidden out of sight.
