Google Chrome on Android automatically suggests trending searches when you tap on the address bar. While some users find this helpful for staying up-to-date with current events, others find it distracting or intrusive. If you prefer a clean search bar that only shows your recent history and bookmarks, you can easily disable trending searches.
How to Disable Trending Searches in Chrome for Android
The process involves turning off a specific flag in your Google Account settings, which applies to your mobile browsing experience.
- Open the Google Chrome app on your Android smartphone.
- Tap the address bar (search bar) at the top of the screen.
- Instead of typing a URL, type
google.comand press Enter to go to the main Google homepage. - Tap the three horizontal lines (hamburger menu) in the top-left corner of the screen.
- Tap on Settings.
- Scroll down to the section labeled Autocomplete with trending searches.
- Select the Do not show popular searches option.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and tap the Save button.
Once you save these settings, Google Chrome will no longer auto-populate the address bar dropdown with trending topics.
Note: If you are using the dedicated “Google” app (not Chrome) on Android, you will need to disable trending searches separately by opening the Google app, tapping your profile picture, selecting Settings > General > Autocomplete settings, and toggling off “Autocomplete with trending searches”.
