Have you ever searched for a new pair of running shoes on your phone, only to spend the next two weeks seeing advertisements for those exact shoes on every single website, game, and app you open? This is not a coincidence; it is “Personalized Advertising.”
Google’s entire business model is built on advertising. Your Android phone constantly builds a silent profile of your interests, age, gender, and location history. It uses this “Advertising ID” to serve you highly targeted ads. While some people prefer seeing ads relevant to their interests, many find this level of tracking deeply invasive.
Fortunately, you have the right to opt-out. This guide explains how to disable personalized ads and delete your Advertising ID on your Android smartphone.
Step 1: Delete Your Advertising ID
The most effective way to stop targeted tracking across third-party apps is to destroy the ID number that connects your behavior together.
- Open the Settings app on your Android device.
- Scroll down and tap on Google (or “Google Services”).
- Tap on Ads.
- You will see a button labeled Delete advertising ID. Tap it.
- A confirmation screen will explain that apps will no longer be able to use your ID to show you personalized ads. Tap Delete advertising ID again to confirm.
By deleting this ID, you are effectively wiping your device’s marketing slate clean. Apps will still show you ads, but they will be generic and un-targeted.
Step 2: Turn Off Google Account Ad Personalization
Deleting your local phone ID stops third-party apps from tracking you, but you must also tell Google to stop personalizing the ads it shows you on its own properties (like YouTube and Google Search).
- Go back to the main Google settings menu (Settings > Google).
- Tap the button at the top that says Manage your Google Account.
- Swipe over to the Data & privacy tab at the top of the screen.
- Scroll down until you find the “Personalized ads” section.
- Tap on My Ad Center.
- At the very top right of the screen, you will see a drop-down menu that says “Personalized ads: On”. Click the drop-down and select Turn off.
- A confirmation pop-up will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap Turn off to finalize the decision.
What to Expect After Opting Out
It is important to understand that turning off personalized ads does not reduce the number of ads you see. Google and third-party apps will still display the exact same volume of advertisements. However, the ads will no longer be based on your search history, your YouTube watch history, or the contents of your emails. Instead, you will see generic ads based purely on the context of the website you are currently looking at, or your general geographical area.
