How to Set Up and Use Live Transcribe on Android for Real-Time Speech-to-Text

Following everyday conversations in noisy environments, crowded conference halls, or busy classrooms can be exhausting for anyone, and presents immense communication barriers for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. While recorded voice notes or post-meeting transcriptions help after the fact, real-time face-to-face dialogue demands instant visual feedback so participants can respond naturally in the moment.

To deliver real-time communication accessibility, Google developed Live Transcribe in partnership with Gallaudet University. Built directly into Android’s core accessibility architecture, Live Transcribe captures ambient speech using your device’s microphone, translates spoken dialogue into large, high-contrast readable text on your display with virtually zero latency, recognizes non-verbal sound events (like door knocks or dog barks), and supports offline transcription.

Key Capabilities of Live Transcribe on Android

Live Transcribe stands apart from generic dictation tools through several purpose-built features:

  • Sub-Second Continuous Transcription: Unlike voice typing that stops listening after a brief pause, Live Transcribe listens indefinitely, streaming live text continuously across your screen as people speak.
  • Sound Event Detection: Beyond human speech, the app’s neural acoustic model identifies background environmental sounds—such as applause, laughter, emergency sirens, phone rings, or running water—displaying small visual badges on screen.
  • Bilingual Quick Switching: Easily toggle between two primary languages (e.g. English and Spanish) with a single tap, ideal for bilingual households and multicultural workplaces.
  • Offline Speech Engine: Download offline language packs to transcribe conversations completely locally without an active Wi-Fi or mobile data connection.
  • Local Transcript History: Optionally save conversation transcripts locally on your device for up to three days to copy notes or review important discussion details.

Enabling Live Transcribe on Your Android Device

Live Transcribe is pre-installed on Google Pixel phones and modern devices from major manufacturers (including Samsung, Motorola, and Xiaomi), and is available for free from the Google Play Store for all Android devices running Android 5.0 and newer.

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android phone.
  2. Scroll down and select Accessibility.
  3. Under the Hearing section, tap Live Transcribe (or Hearing enhancements > Live Transcribe on Samsung devices).
  4. Toggle on the Live Transcribe shortcut switch.
  5. A permission prompt explains the shortcut methods (such as a floating on-screen accessibility button, holding both volume keys, or a two-finger triple-tap). Choose your preferred activation shortcut and tap Allow.

Using Live Transcribe in a Spoken Conversation

Once the shortcut is active, launching and using Live Transcribe takes a single touch:

  1. Tap the Accessibility button on the side of your screen (or use your configured shortcut).
  2. Live Transcribe launches full screen immediately with a dark, high-contrast background.
  3. Hold your phone naturally or place it on the table between you and the speaker.
  4. As someone begins talking, words appear instantaneously in large, clear typography across your screen.
  5. Watch the small volume indicator in the upper-right corner: a green circular indicator pulses when your microphone is picking up clear audio, helping you adjust your phone’s position closer to the speaker if background noise is high.

Replying via Text When You Cannot Speak

Live Transcribe supports bidirectional communication for non-verbal users or silent environments:

  1. While transcription is active, tap the Keyboard icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
  2. Type your response using your virtual keyboard.
  3. Your typed response appears in bold, enlarged text across the display so the other person can read what you have to say without you needing to vocalise.
  4. Tap the Microphone icon to return to listening mode.

Configuring Offline Transcription and Languages

To ensure transcription works seamlessly while travelling or in areas with poor cellular reception, download offline speech packs:

  1. In the Live Transcribe screen, tap the Settings gear in the bottom-left corner.
  2. Tap More settings.
  3. Under the Audio & language section, tap Primary language and select your native dialect (e.g. English (United Kingdom)).
  4. Tap Offline languages and tap the download icon next to your language pack.
  5. Once downloaded, Live Transcribe processes speech entirely on-device, saving mobile data and ensuring complete privacy.

Managing Transcript History and Privacy

By default, Live Transcribe keeps transcript history private and ephemeral:

Feature Default State How to Configure
Save Transcripts Off (Deleted upon closing) Settings > More settings > Toggle Save transcription for 3 days.
Copying Text Manual selection Press and hold anywhere on the screen text > Tap Select all > Copy.
Haptic Sound Alerts On Settings > More settings > Vibrate when a sound event or name is spoken.

Google Live Transcribe is an extraordinary assistive technology that turns any Android smartphone into an instant, reliable speech interpreter, bridging communication gaps in everyday personal and professional life.
