If you have friends or family visiting and they ask for your home Wi-Fi password, finding the physical slip of paper or checking the back of the router can be incredibly inconvenient. Fortunately, if your Android smartphone is already connected to the network, you can easily retrieve the password directly from your device.
In older versions of Android, viewing saved Wi-Fi passwords required complex workarounds or “rooting” the device. However, starting with Android 10, Google introduced a native, secure method to view and share your saved network credentials. Here is how to find your Wi-Fi passwords on most modern Android smartphones.
How to View the Password on Stock Android (Pixel, Motorola)
If you are using a Google Pixel, a Motorola device, or any phone running a clean, stock version of Android, the process is straightforward.
- Open the Settings app on your phone.
- Tap on Network & internet.
- Tap on Internet (or Wi-Fi on slightly older models).
- You will see the network you are currently connected to at the top of the list. Tap the gear icon (Settings) next to the network name.
- On the Network details screen, tap the Share icon (which usually looks like a small QR code).
- For security purposes, your phone will prompt you to authenticate using your fingerprint, face unlock, or PIN code.
- A screen will appear displaying a large QR code. Look directly below the QR code, and you will see the Wi-Fi password written in plain text.
How to View the Password on Samsung Galaxy Devices
Samsung uses a custom interface called One UI, which slightly changes the layout of the settings menus. The method is very similar but requires an extra step.
- Open the Settings app on your Samsung Galaxy device.
- Tap on Connections.
- Tap on Wi-Fi.
- Tap the gear icon next to the network you are currently connected to.
- At the bottom left of the screen, tap the QR code button.
- Unlike stock Android, the password might not immediately appear below the QR code. If it does not, tap Save as image to save the QR code to your gallery.
- Open the Samsung Gallery app, view the saved image, and tap the Bixby Vision icon (the small eye) or simply long-press on the QR code. The software will read the code and display the network name and password in plain text.
How to Share Wi-Fi Without Revealing the Password
If you want to grant someone internet access but prefer to keep your actual password a secret, you can use the QR code feature.
Instead of reading the plain text password below the code, simply leave the QR code visible on your screen. Ask your friend to open the camera app on their smartphone (this works for both iPhones and Androids) and point it at your screen. Their phone will automatically scan the code and prompt them to join the network instantly, without ever knowing the underlying password.
This method is highly recommended for security, as it prevents guests from accidentally saving your password and sharing it with others in the future.
