How to Manage and Revoke Location Permissions for Apps on Android

When installing new mobile apps on Android, many games, social networks, and shopping apps routinely request access to your device’s physical GPS location. While navigation apps like Google Maps and ride-hailing services genuinely require high-precision coordinates to function, dozens of non-essential apps silently request location data in the background purely to build commercial advertising profiles. Modern versions of Android provide granular privacy controls that let you audit, restrict, and revoke location access across all installed applications.

Precise vs. Approximate Location: What Is the Difference?

Android divides location access into two distinct privacy tiers:

  • Precise Location: Uses satellite GPS, Wi-Fi tri-angulation, and cellular towers to pinpoint your exact physical location down to a few metres. Essential for turn-by-turn navigation and delivery drivers.
  • Approximate Location: Delivers a broad, 3-square-kilometre city-block radius. Perfect for local weather forecasts, food menus, or regional news without exposing your home address.

How to Audit All Apps with Location Access via Permission Manager

The Permission Manager gives you a bird’s-eye view of every app that can access your GPS:

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android smartphone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Security & privacy (or Privacy).
  3. Tap on Permission manager.
  4. Select Location from the permissions list.
  5. Android will display your apps organized into four clear categories:
    • Allowed all the time: Apps that can track your location even when closed in the background.
    • Allowed only while in use: Apps that can only query GPS while open on your screen.
    • Ask every time: Prompts you each time the app launches.
    • Not allowed: Completely blocked from location access.

How to Restrict or Revoke an App’s Location Access

To lock down an intrusive app:

  1. In the Location permissions list, tap on the specific application you want to restrict.
  2. Select Don’t allow to revoke access entirely.
  3. Or select Allow only while using the app to block silent background tracking.
  4. To protect your exact coordinates, toggle off the switch for Use precise location. The app will receive only general regional data.

Quick Privacy Toggle: Master Location Switch

If you are in a sensitive meeting or want to ensure zero apps track you temporarily, swipe down your Quick Settings shade twice and tap the Location tile to turn off device GPS globally with a single touch.
