How to Enable Notification History to View Dismissed Alerts on Android

Every Android user has experienced the frustration of picking up their phone, seeing a cluster of incoming alerts, and tapping “Clear all” or swiping away a notification too quickly before reading it. Once dismissed, that crucial one-time verification code, urgent chat message, package delivery update, or banking alert disappears from your status bar forever. To solve this problem, Android includes a built-in Notification History log that records every alert received over the past 24 hours, even after you swipe them away.

Why You Should Enable Notification History Immediately

Keeping a local log of incoming notifications provides a vital safety net:

  • Recover Swiped Alerts: Revisit notifications you accidentally swiped away or cleared during busy moments.
  • Read Deleted Messages: In apps like WhatsApp or Telegram, if someone sends a message and subsequently uses “Delete for Everyone”, the original text remains preserved in your Notification History log if your phone received the push notification.
  • Track Spamy Background Apps: Identify which apps are sending unwanted silent ads or spam notifications so you can revoke their permissions.

How to Turn On Notification History in Android Settings

Notification History is disabled by default for privacy reasons. Enabling it requires only a few taps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android device (Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, Motorola, Xiaomi, etc.).
  2. Tap on Notifications.
  3. Select Notification history (on Samsung Galaxy devices, tap Advanced settings > Notification history).
  4. Toggle the switch to Use notification history (or On).
  5. From this moment onward, your phone will maintain an unedited 24-hour chronological log of all incoming system and app alerts.

How to View Dismissed Notifications Later

Once the feature is active, checking your history is instantaneous:

  1. Swipe down from the top of your screen to open the notification shade.
  2. Look at the bottom of your active alerts list next to the “Clear all” button for the small History button.
  3. Tap History.
  4. The history log opens, neatly grouped into two sections:
    • Recently dismissed: Shows the exact notifications you swiped away within the last few minutes.
    • Last 24 hours: Shows an app-by-app breakdown of every notification received, complete with exact timestamps and preview text.
  5. Tapping any item in the history log directly launches the originating application.
