The default keyboard on most Android devices (Gboard) includes a Predictive Text feature that displays a strip of suggested words above the keys as you type. This system learns your vocabulary, slang, and frequently used phrases over time to speed up data entry. Disable Predictive Text System-Wide (Gboard)
To prevent the keyboard from displaying learned words and predicting your next keystrokes, we must turn off the text correction features within the Gboard settings.
- Open the main Settings app on your Android smartphone.
- Scroll down and tap on System.
- Tap on Languages & input (or Keyboard & input).
- Tap on On-screen keyboard.
- Select Gboard (or your currently active default keyboard).
- In the Gboard settings menu, tap on Text correction.
- Under the “Suggestions” header, locate the master toggle switch labeled Show suggestion strip.
- Toggle this switch to the Off (grey) position.
- Optional but recommended: Scroll down and toggle off Personalized suggestions to stop the keyboard from learning new words entirely.
Verify the System State
