How to Completely Disable ‘Bluetooth Tethering’ System-Wide on Android

Bluetooth Tethering is a networking feature on Android smartphones that allows you to share your device’s cellular data connection with other devices (like laptops, tablets, or other phones) over a Bluetooth Personal Area Network (PAN). While slower than a traditional Wi-Fi mobile hotspot, it is highly power-efficient and operates silently in the background. In strict corporate environments, this feature presents a significant data exfiltration and security risk. An employee could potentially bypass corporate network filters by silently bridging a restricted corporate laptop to their phone’s unfiltered cellular data connection via Bluetooth, or conversely, tether an unmanaged, potentially compromised personal device to a corporately provisioned data plan.

Disable Bluetooth Tethering System-Wide

To enforce this restriction, we must access the centralized tethering and hotspot management menu, which directly controls the network bridging interfaces.

  1. Open the main Settings app on your Android smartphone.
  2. Tap on Network & internet (or “Connections” depending on your device manufacturer).
  3. Tap on Hotspot & tethering.
  4. Locate the toggle switch specifically labeled Bluetooth tethering.
  5. Toggle the switch to the Off (grey) position.

Verify the System State

Toggling this switch instructs the Android kernel to tear down the bnep0 (Bluetooth Network Encapsulation Protocol) networking interface, completely severing the bridge between the cellular modem and the Bluetooth radio stack.

To verify the change is successful, leave the settings menu and attempt to pair another device (such as a Windows laptop) to your Android phone via Bluetooth. Once paired, go to the Bluetooth settings on the laptop and look for the option to “Join Personal Area Network” or use the phone as an internet connection.
