By default, Android smartphones emit a distinct audible click every time you tap a key on the virtual keyboard, dial a number on the phone pad, or make a selection on the screen. While intended to provide auditory feedback confirming your touch input, these constant “blips” and “clicks” can be incredibly annoying in quiet environments, such as a library, a meeting room, or when someone is sleeping nearby. If you prefer a completely silent tactile experience, you must disable these touch sounds at the operating system level.
This guide explains how to completely disable Touch Sounds (including keyboard clicks and dialpad tones) system-wide on an Android smartphone.
Disable Touch Sounds via Settings
Android groups all of its UI feedback sounds under the Sound & vibration menu. Silencing the phone using the volume rocker does not always permanently mute these specific UI elements, so a manual configuration change is required.
- Open the main Settings app on your Android smartphone.
- Scroll down and tap on Sound & vibration.
- Scroll down to the bottom of this menu. On Pixel devices, this section is usually visible immediately; on Samsung Galaxy devices, you may need to tap System sound/vibration control.
- Locate the following toggle switches:
- Dial pad tones (or “Dialing keypad”)
- Screen locking sound
- Touch sounds (or “Touch interactions”)
- Tap each switch to toggle them to the Off (grey) position.
Disable Keyboard-Specific Sounds
If you are using Gboard (the default Google Keyboard), it occasionally overrides the system-wide touch sounds setting with its own internal configuration. To ensure the keyboard is totally silent:
- Open any app to bring up the Gboard keyboard (like a text message).
- Tap the Gear icon (Settings) directly on the keyboard’s toolbar.
- Tap on Preferences.
- Scroll down to the “Key press” section.
- Locate the toggle labelled Sound on keypress and switch it to Off.
Verify the Silence
The changes take effect immediately.
To verify that your device is completely silent, open the Phone app and rapidly dial a few numbers on the keypad. Then, open a text message and rapidly type a sentence. Your smartphone will remain completely silent, providing a much less intrusive and more discreet user experience.
