Screen-On Time (SOT) is the single most informative benchmark for measuring smartphone battery efficiency. Unlike standby duration, which measures how long a phone survives in a pocket or on a desk, SOT calculates the exact number of hours and minutes the display actively illuminated during everyday tasks such as web browsing, streaming, navigation, and gaming.
Modern versions of Android allow you to inspect screen consumption both from a battery drain perspective and from a digital wellness perspective.
Checking Screen-On Time Since Last Full Charge (Battery Settings)
To inspect active screen time directly tied to your battery cycle:
- Open the Settings app on your Android smartphone.
- Tap Battery (or Battery and device care on Samsung Galaxy devices).
- Tap Battery usage (on Samsung devices, tap the battery usage graph directly).
- Look for the metric labelled Screen time since last full charge or Screen on.
Below the metric, Android renders a complete breakdown of every app that consumed energy, categorised by Screen time (active foreground use) and Background time (syncing, location tracking, and audio playback while the screen remained dark).
Checking Daily Screen Time via Digital Wellbeing
If you wish to audit your overall device engagement and monitor screen usage by calendar day:
- Open Settings and tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
- Tap the large circular chart in the centre of the display.
- At the top, ensure Screen time is selected from the metric drop-down.
- Review the bar chart displaying your total screen duration for the current day. Tap the left and right arrows to review usage history over previous days and weeks.
Identifying Background Battery Drainers
If your phone demonstrates low screen-on time yet depletes its battery rapidly, examine the per-app battery audit in Settings > Battery > Battery usage. If an app exhibits disproportionately high Background time relative to its foreground usage, tap the app and select Restricted under battery optimisation to prevent it from draining charge when not in active use.
