How to Configure Check In and Safety Alerts in watchOS 11

Heading out for early morning trail runs, late-night transit commutes, or solitary cycling treks presents safety concerns for outdoor athletes and commuters. If an accident occurs or you fail to reach your destination, loved ones are often unaware until hours later. While Apple introduced Check In in iOS 17 within the Messages app, watchOS 11 brings Check In directly to the Apple Watch wrist interface. Users can initiate automated location-tracking safety sessions, broadcast live workout tracking, and automatically notify emergency contacts if unexpected delays occur without needing to handle an iPhone.

Hardware and Software Prerequisites

To use Check In directly from Apple Watch:

  • Apple Watch: Apple Watch Series 6 or later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), or Apple Watch Ultra / Ultra 2 running watchOS 11.0 or later.
  • Paired iPhone: iPhone running iOS 18.0 or later with cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity. Apple Watch cellular models can initiate Check In untethered from an iPhone.
  • Location Services: Location Services must be enabled under Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.

Starting a Check In via the Messages App on Apple Watch

To launch a destination-based or timer-based safety check:

  1. Press the Digital Crown on your Apple Watch and open the Messages app.
  2. Tap the conversation thread with the trusted family member or contact you want to notify.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the conversation and tap the + (App menu) button.
  4. Select Check In.
  5. Choose your session parameters:
    • When I arrive: Enter a destination (e.g., your home address, gym, or hotel). Check In calculates estimated travel time and monitors your GPS trajectory.
    • After a timer: Specify a countdown duration (e.g., 45 minutes for a quick park run).
  6. Tap Send. Your contact receives an interactive Check In card in Messages.

Integrating Check In Directly into the Workout App

In watchOS 11, Check In is embedded directly into outdoor fitness sessions:

  1. Open the Workout app on Apple Watch.
  2. Select an outdoor activity (Outdoor Run, Outdoor Walk, Outdoor Cycle, or Hiking).
  3. Before tapping the activity to start, swipe right on the workout card to reveal the Workout Settings pane.
  4. Tap Check In.
  5. Select a designated recipient.
  6. When you begin the workout, Check In activates automatically in the background. When you end the workout, Check In resolves and alerts your contact that you completed the session safely.

What Happens During an Unexpected Delay or Emergency

If you fail to progress toward your destination or the timer expires:

  • Your Apple Watch alerts you with prominent haptic vibrations and an on-screen prompt: “Are you okay?” with a 15-minute response window.
  • If you respond and extend the timer, Check In updates your contact seamlessly.
  • If you do not respond, Check In automatically transmits a high-priority safety alert to your designated contact containing your last known GPS coordinates, cellular battery level, network connection state, and the exact route you traveled.
