How to Use the App Switcher to Switch Between and Force Quit Apps on iPad

Modern iPads are versatile productivity workstations capable of running multiple demanding applications simultaneously, spanning word processors, creative illustration suites, video editors, and web browsers. When juggling tasks across several open applications, returning to the Home Screen every time you need to change tasks interrupts your workflow.

iPadOS features a centralised App Switcher interface that visually displays thumbnail previews of every active application, Split View workspace, and Slide Over drawer. Beyond enabling rapid multi-tasking and quick window switching, the App Switcher is the primary system tool used to force quit unresponsive or frozen applications. This tutorial explains how to open the App Switcher, navigate active workspaces, and force quit applications on iPad using touchscreen gestures and external keyboard shortcuts.

How to Open the App Switcher on iPad

Depending on whether your iPad features a physical Home button or uses modern edge-to-edge gestures, accessing the App Switcher requires a specific motion:

On iPads Without a Home Button (iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad mini, and 10th-Gen iPad)

  1. From any open application or the Home Screen, swipe upwards from the bottom horizontal gesture bar at the base of the display.
  2. Pause your finger in the middle of the screen for roughly half a second until the active app window shrinks into a card.
  3. Lift your finger from the screen: the App Switcher grid will appear, displaying thumbnail cards of all recent apps and split-screen workspaces.

On iPads With a Physical Home Button (9th-Gen iPad and Earlier Models)

  1. Double-click the physical circular Home button below the screen in quick succession.
  2. The display will instantly transition into the App Switcher overview.

Using Four-Finger Multitasking Gestures

If multitasking gestures are enabled in iPadOS settings, you can swipe upwards from anywhere on the display using four or five fingers simultaneously to trigger the App Switcher instantly without relying on the bottom gesture bar.

How to Switch Between Apps Using the App Switcher

Once the App Switcher interface is open, navigating between open tasks is fast and intuitive:

  • Horizontal Paging: Swipe left or right across the screen to scroll through earlier apps and paired Split View windows in chronological order.
  • Selecting an App: Tap any preview card to bring that application directly to the foreground in full-screen view.
  • Accessing the Dock: The iPadOS Dock remains accessible along the bottom of the App Switcher, allowing you to launch pinned apps or open the App Library without returning to the Home Screen.
  • Accessing Control Centre: On older versions of iPadOS, swiping to the far right inside the App Switcher reveals the Control Centre sliders for volume and brightness.

How to Force Quit Frozen or Unresponsive Apps on iPad

Under normal conditions, iPadOS manages background memory automatically by suspending inactive apps, meaning there is no need to manually close apps to save battery life. However, if an app freezes, fails to load content, or stops responding to touch input, force quitting clears it from RAM and forces a clean restart:

  1. Open the App Switcher using the swipe-and-pause gesture or by double-clicking the Home button.
  2. Swipe left or right to locate the preview card of the unresponsive app.
  3. Touch the preview card and flick it upwards towards the top of the display.
  4. The card will fly off the screen, terminating the application process entirely.
  5. Return to the Home Screen or Dock and tap the app’s icon to launch it afresh.

Tip: You can close multiple apps simultaneously by placing three fingers on three separate cards in the App Switcher and flicking upwards together.

How to Switch and Close Apps Using an External Keyboard

If your iPad is attached to an Apple Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard Folio, or third-party Bluetooth keyboard, you can navigate and dismiss apps without touching the screen:

  • Quick App Switching (Command + Tab): Press and hold Command (⌘), then press Tab. A floating horizontal app strip will appear. Continue tapping Tab to cycle through active applications, then release Command to switch to the highlighted app.
  • Open the App Switcher: Press the dedicated Globe key (🌐) + Up Arrow on supported Apple keyboards to open the full App Switcher grid.
  • Direct Force Quit Shortcut: When cycling through apps with Command + Tab, keep Command held down, highlight the problematic app, and press Q to force close it immediately.

Navigating Split View and Slide Over Windows in App Switcher

The App Switcher treats multi-window workspaces as single cohesive units:

  • Split View Pairs: If you are running Safari and Apple Notes side by side, they appear as a single dual-window card in the App Switcher. Flicking this card upwards closes both applications simultaneously.
  • Separating Paired Apps: If you wish to separate paired apps, open the App Switcher, drag one of the paired app windows out of the combined card, and drop it onto an empty space on the grid to restore it as an independent full-screen window.
  • Slide Over Stack: Slide Over floating windows appear on the far right of the App Switcher cards. Tap the Slide Over card to return to your floating drawer.
