How to Unsend an Email in Apple Mail

We have all experienced the sheer panic of clicking the “Send” button on a highly important email, only to realize half a second later that you forgot to attach the resume, misspelled the CEO’s name, or accidentally replied to the entire company instead of a single colleague.

For years, Apple Mail users were out of luck. Once it left the outbox, it was gone forever. However, starting with iOS 16 (for iPhone) and macOS Ventura (for Mac), Apple finally introduced a native “Undo Send” feature. It works by artificially delaying the physical transmission of the email for a few seconds, giving you a brief, frantic window to snatch it back before it actually hits the server.

How to Unsend an Email on a Mac (macOS Ventura or Later)

The Undo Send feature is turned on by default, but you must act incredibly fast to use it.

  1. Compose your email in the Apple Mail app on your Mac and click the Send button (the paper airplane icon).
  2. Immediately look at the absolute bottom-left corner of the main Mail window (below your list of mailboxes).
  3. You will see a small, blue text link that says Undo Send.
  4. Click that blue text immediately.

If you click it in time, the email will instantly pop back open on your screen as an editable draft. You can now attach the missing file, fix the typo, or simply delete the draft entirely. The recipient will never know you attempted to send it.

How to Give Yourself More Time (Change the Delay)

By default, Apple only gives you a terrifying 10-second window to click the Undo Send button. If you want a slightly larger safety net, you can increase this artificial delay in the settings.

  1. Open the Mail app on your Mac.
  2. Click on the word Mail in the top-left menu bar (next to the Apple logo) and select Settings…
  3. Click on the Composing tab at the top of the Settings window.
  4. Look for the option labeled Undo send delay:
  5. Click the drop-down menu and change it from 10 Seconds to 30 Seconds.

The process on a mobile device is identical, but the button is located in a different spot on the screen.

  1. Compose your email in the iOS Mail app and tap the blue Send arrow.
  2. The compose screen will close, dropping you back into your Inbox.
  3. Immediately look at the absolute bottom-center of the screen (on the toolbar below your emails).
  4. You will see blue text that says Undo Send.
  5. Tap the text.

The email will slide back up onto the screen as a draft.

How to Change the Delay on an iPhone

Just like the Mac, you can extend the artificial delay on your iPhone up to 30 seconds.

  1. Open the main iOS Settings app (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down and tap on Mail.
  3. Scroll all the way to the very bottom of the Mail settings page.
  4. Tap on Undo Send Delay.
  5. Change the checkmark from 10 Seconds to 30 Seconds.

The Critical Limitation of “Undo Send”

You must understand that Apple has not invented a magical way to reach into someone else’s inbox and delete an email. That is technologically impossible across different email providers (like sending from iCloud to a Gmail address).

The “Undo Send” feature is simply a localized outbox delay. When you click Send, Apple Mail holds the email on your device for 10 to 30 seconds. If the timer expires, the email is physically transmitted to the internet server. Once the blue “Undo Send” text disappears from your screen, the email is gone. There is no force on earth that can unsend it.
