Google Sheets is an excellent tool for organising raw data, but its default appearance is incredibly utilitarian. The entire screen is covered by a rigid grid of faint grey lines, which helps you align rows and columns while building formulas. However, when it comes time to present this data to your boss, or physically print the spreadsheet for a boardroom meeting, those grey gridlines make the document look messy, unprofessional, and cluttered.
While you can try to mask the grid by filling cells with white colour, this is an inefficient workaround that often breaks formatting. Instead, Google Sheets provides a built-in toggle switch to completely disable the background grid, leaving you with a clean, blank canvas that looks much closer to a professionally formatted Word document than a raw database.
Hiding the Gridlines on Your Screen
If you are presenting the spreadsheet directly from your laptop or sharing your screen during a video call, you will want to hide the gridlines from the live digital view.
- Open your spreadsheet in Google Sheets.
- Look at the main menu bar at the top of the screen and click on View.
- Hover your mouse over the Show option to reveal a secondary menu.
- Look for the item labelled Gridlines. It will likely have a small checkmark next to it, indicating it is currently active.
- Click on Gridlines to uncheck it.
The faint grey lines will instantly vanish from your entire spreadsheet. Any thick, black borders that you manually applied to specific cells (such as around a total row) will remain perfectly intact, ensuring your important data still stands out.
Hiding Gridlines Specifically for Printing
If you prefer to keep the gridlines visible on your screen while you work, but want them removed strictly when you generate a PDF or print the document to paper, you can control this inside the print settings menu.
- With your spreadsheet open, click on File in the top menu bar.
- Scroll to the very bottom of the menu and click Print (or press Ctrl + P / Cmd + P).
- The screen will change to the Print settings interface, showing a preview of your document on the left and a settings panel on the right.
- In the right-hand panel, click on the section labelled Formatting to expand it.
- You will see a checkbox labelled Show gridlines.
- Click this checkbox to uncheck it. The print preview on the left will immediately update to reflect a clean, borderless page.
- Click the blue Next button in the top right corner to send the clean document to your printer.
