The Social Obligation Vector
Apple’s iMessage protocol includes a highly specific tracking feature known as “Read Receipts.” When someone sends you an iMessage, a tiny “Delivered” tag appears under their text bubble. The exact microsecond you open that conversation on your iPhone, your device transmits a silent signal back to Apple’s servers, changing their “Delivered” tag to “Read” (along with a precise timestamp). This creates immense psychological pressure to reply immediately, as the sender now possesses cryptographic proof that you have seen their message.
How to Turn Off the Read Receipts
To eliminate this social friction and reclaim your privacy, you must sever the iPhone’s ability to broadcast that specific “Read” signal back to the Apple servers.
1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Scroll down the main list of applications until you locate the green Messages icon. Tap it.
3. Scroll down the Messages configuration page until you find the section governing how texts are handled.
4. Locate the toggle switch explicitly labelled Send Read Receipts.
5. Tap the toggle to switch it to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).
The Global Impact: This is a master override. From this moment forward, you can open any iMessage, read it in full, and close the app. The person who sent it will only ever see the word “Delivered.” They will have absolutely no technical way to know if you have actually read their text. Note: This only applies to the blue iMessage bubbles; standard green SMS text messages never supported read receipts in the first place.
