The Algorithmic Interference Vector
The iOS virtual keyboard features an aggressive, machine-learning-driven Auto-Correction engine. While designed to fix common typographical errors, it frequently intervenes incorrectly—changing technical jargon into standard dictionary words, altering specific names, or rewriting slang into formal English. For users who frequently type in multiple languages simultaneously, or those discussing highly specialised subjects, this constant algorithmic interference slows down communication and forces you to repeatedly delete and retype the same word.
How to Turn Off Auto-Correction
You can instruct the iPhone to completely disable its predictive replacement engine, ensuring that what you tap on the screen is exactly what gets transmitted.
1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Scroll down and tap on General.
3. Scroll down the General menu and select Keyboard.
4. Under the All Keyboards section, locate the toggle switch labelled Auto-Correction.
5. Tap the toggle to switch it to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).
Your iPhone will immediately stop overwriting your text. The keyboard will still highlight misspelled words with a red underline (assuming you leave “Check Spelling” enabled), but it will no longer take independent action to change the characters you have deliberately typed.
