How to Turn Any Website into a Mac Web App Using Safari

Many essential daily digital tools—such as project boards, webmail inboxes, music streaming dashboards, and generative AI interfaces—operate primarily within browser tabs. However, managing these daily tools inside crowded Safari windows means they can easily be buried beneath temporary research tabs or closed accidentally. Starting in macOS Sonoma (macOS 14) and continuing in macOS Sequoia, Apple introduced Add to Dock, allowing you to convert any website into a standalone native-feeling Mac web app with its own Dock icon, independent window, and isolated notification badges.

Benefits of Creating a Safari Web App

A web app behaves like a native macOS application rather than a browser tab:

  • Dedicated Window: Web apps open in streamlined app windows without browser address bars, tab strips, or navigation buttons, maximizing usable screen space.
  • Persistent Dock Icon: Keeps your critical tool anchored directly in your macOS Dock, reachable via Cmd + Tab app switching.
  • Isolated Cookies and Sessions: Web apps share cookies and credentials with Safari during setup, but operate in distinct sandboxed containers so clearing Safari’s general history won’t log you out of your web apps.
  • Native Notification Badges: Web apps can send system notifications and display unread alert badges directly over their Dock icon.

How to Convert a Website into a Web App

Generating a native web app takes only three clicks:

  1. Launch Safari on your Mac running macOS Sonoma or later.
  2. Navigate to the website or web dashboard you want to convert (e.g., digitash.com or your favourite webmail service).
  3. Click on the File menu in the top macOS menu bar.
  4. Select Add to Dock…
  5. A popup dialog appears showing the website favicon, title, and URL.
  6. Customize the app title if desired (for instance, shorten “Google Calendar: Your Schedules” to simply “Calendar”).
  7. Click Add.
  8. The web app icon immediately animates into your macOS Dock and saves a launcher file into your personal ~/Applications folder.

Customising Web App Settings and Navigation

Once launched, you can refine how your new web app behaves:

  1. Click the web app icon in your Dock to launch it.
  2. Notice the clean window design; back and forward arrows appear subtly in the top title bar when navigating internal links.
  3. Click the web app’s name in the top menu bar and select Settings… (or press Cmd + ,).
  4. Under the General tab, you can customize the app name, choose whether navigation controls appear in the title bar, or adjust notification permissions.

How to Uninstall or Remove a Web App

If you no longer need the standalone app:

  • Right-click the app icon in your Dock and select Options > Remove from Dock.
  • Open Finder, press Cmd + Shift + H to open your Home folder, enter Applications, and drag the web app file to the Trash.
