How to Create a New Folder in Google Drive

As you upload more files, photos, and documents to Google Drive, the main dashboard can quickly become messy and difficult to navigate. To keep your digital workspace organised, you should group related files together. Just like on your computer’s hard drive, the best way to do this is by creating folders.

How to Create a Folder on a Computer

  • Open your web browser and navigate to drive.google.com.
  • In the top-left corner of the screen, click the large button that says + New.
  • Select New folder from the top of the dropdown menu.
  • A small window will pop up. Type a name for your new folder (e.g., “Tax Documents 2024” or “Holiday Photos”).
  • Click the Create button.

Your new folder will instantly appear in the “Folders” section of your Drive. You can now drag and drop files directly into it.

How to Create a Folder on Mobile (iOS & Android)

If you are organising your files on the go using a smartphone or tablet, the process is just as easy.

  • Open the Google Drive app on your device.
  • Tap the large floating + (Plus) button in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  • Tap the Folder icon.
  • Type in the desired name for your folder.
  • Tap Create.

Pro Tip: Colour Coding Folders

By default, all Google Drive folders are dark grey. To make your most important folders stand out visually, you can change their colour.

On a computer, simply right-click the folder you just created, hover your mouse over Organise, and then select a colour from the palette provided. On a mobile device, tap the three dots next to the folder name and select Change colour.
