How to Change Your Default Search Engine in Safari on iPhone

When you purchase a new iPhone and open the Safari web browser, typing a query into the address bar will automatically route your search through Google. While Google is the world’s most popular search engine, it is not your only option. Apple provides built-in support for several alternative search engines, allowing you to prioritise privacy, support different tech ecosystems, or try a different search algorithm.

Whether you want to switch to DuckDuckGo for enhanced privacy, Microsoft Bing to earn Microsoft Rewards, or Yahoo for a different experience, changing your default search engine takes only a few seconds.

How to Change Your Safari Search Engine

The default search engine is not changed within the Safari app itself. Instead, you must manage it through your iPhone’s main system settings.

  1. Unlock your iPhone and open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down the main settings list and tap on Safari.
  3. Look for the section titled Search.
  4. Tap on Search Engine. (You will see your current default listed next to it).
  5. You will be presented with a list of supported search providers:
    • Google (Default)
    • Yahoo
    • Bing
    • DuckDuckGo
    • Ecosia
  6. Tap on your preferred search engine. A blue checkmark will appear next to your selection.

You can immediately close the Settings app. The change takes effect instantly.

Understanding the Alternative Search Engines

If you are considering switching away from Google, here is a brief overview of the built-in alternatives Apple provides:

  • DuckDuckGo: The most popular choice for privacy-conscious users. DuckDuckGo does not track your search history or build a profile on your browsing habits, meaning you will not see hyper-targeted ads based on your queries.
  • Ecosia: A unique, environmentally focused search engine. Ecosia uses the advertising revenue generated from your searches to fund tree-planting initiatives around the world. Their search results are powered by Microsoft Bing.
  • Bing: Microsoft’s primary search engine. Many users choose Bing because they are enrolled in the Microsoft Rewards program, which allows them to earn points for searching that can be redeemed for gift cards.
  • Yahoo: One of the internet’s oldest search portals. Today, Yahoo’s underlying search algorithms are also powered by Microsoft Bing, but the interface and news integrations are unique to Yahoo.

How to Change the Search Engine for Private Browsing

Starting with iOS 17, Apple introduced a fantastic new feature: the ability to assign a completely different default search engine specifically for Private Browsing mode. This means you could use Google for your everyday searches, but have Safari automatically switch to a privacy-focused engine like DuckDuckGo whenever you open a Private Tab.

  1. Go to Settings > Safari.
  2. Under the “Search” section, tap on Private Search Engine.
  3. Select your preferred engine for private browsing.

This allows you to maintain maximum privacy during sensitive searches without compromising the convenience of your primary search engine for daily tasks.
