How to Extract Text from Images Using Live Text in Preview on macOS

When you are sent a photograph of a physical document, a business card, or a screenshot containing a massive block of alphanumeric data, manually re-typing the information on your macOS workstation is highly inefficient and prone to human error. To bypass manual data entry, you must force the macOS neural engine to execute an instantaneous Optical Character Recognition (OCR) scan on the image pixels, a feature natively known as “Live Text.” This powerful extraction engine is built directly into the macOS Preview application.

Executing the Biometric Scan

The Live Text engine (introduced in macOS Monterey and optimized in later versions) mathematically runs in the background the exact millisecond you open a compatible image format (JPEG, PNG, HEIC, or PDF) in Preview.

  1. Locate the target image file in Finder and double-click to open it natively in Preview.

  1. Click and drag the I-Beam cursor over the visual text. A standard blue highlight will appear, exactly as if you were highlighting text in a Word document or a web browser.
  2. Press the Cmd + C keyboard shortcut, or right-click the highlighted block and select Copy.

The exact millisecond you execute the copy command, the macOS engine algorithmically converts the highlighted pixels into a pristine, ASCII-formatted string and injects it directly into your system clipboard. You can now press Cmd + V to paste the extracted data into a text editor, an email, or a terminal window. The engine is highly advanced; it preserves spacing, line breaks, and can seamlessly read complex fonts or handwritten script with near-perfect accuracy.
