When someone emails you a screenshot of a lengthy error code or a scanned photograph of a legal contract, you usually have to manually retype the text into a Word document to edit it. This process is incredibly slow and highly prone to typos. However, you no longer need to type anything. The built-in macOS Preview application contains a highly advanced AI feature called Live Text, which performs Optical Character Recognition (OCR) directly on image files, allowing you to copy and paste text out of a photograph just like a standard PDF document.
How Live Text OCR Works
Live Text is deeply integrated into the macOS kernel (available on macOS Monterey and later). The moment you open an image file, the Apple Silicon neural engine invisibly scans the pixels, searching for shapes that resemble letters, numbers, and punctuation.
If you have an image file containing text (like a screenshot of a website or a photograph of a restaurant menu):
- Double-click the image to open it in Preview.
- Move your mouse cursor directly over the text located inside the image.
- The cursor will automatically change from a standard arrow pointer into an I-beam (the vertical text-selection cursor).
This instant cursor change indicates that the Live Text AI has successfully recognized the pixels as actual, readable text.
How to Extract the Text
Because Preview treats the image exactly like a standard text document, extracting the data is incredibly intuitive.
- Click and hold your mouse button down at the beginning of the text paragraph inside the image.
- Drag your mouse downward to highlight the text in blue.
- Press Command + C on your keyboard to copy the text to your invisible Mac clipboard.
You can now open Apple Pages, Microsoft Word, or an empty email draft and press Command + V to paste the text perfectly into the document. The text is fully editable and searchable.
Extracting Data in Bulk
If you have scanned a dense, massive legal document that has been saved as a flat JPEG, and you need to extract the entire page of text instantly, you do not need to manually drag your mouse across every single paragraph.
Simply open the image in Preview and press Command + A (Select All). The Live Text engine will instantly highlight every single recognized word on the entire image simultaneously, allowing you to instantly copy and paste the entire document’s contents in one swift motion.
