There is nothing more frustrating than opening multiple web pages and suddenly hearing loud, auto-playing video or audio from an unknown tab. Instead of frantically clicking through all your open tabs to find the source of the noise, Safari provides a built-in tool to instantly silence it.
Mac users can quickly mute a specific tab or all tabs at once directly from the browser’s interface, allowing you to regain focus without closing the page.

How to Find Which Tab is Playing Audio
Before you can mute the tab, you need to identify it. Safari makes this easy by displaying a small Speaker icon right on the tab that is actively playing sound.
Additionally, you will see a blue Speaker icon in the Safari Smart Search field (the URL address bar at the top of the browser). This icon acts as a master control for whatever audio is currently playing.
How to Mute a Specific Tab
If you know exactly which tab is making the noise, muting it takes just one click.
- Locate the tab in your tab bar that has the small Speaker icon.
- Click directly on the Speaker icon.
- The icon will change to a speaker with a diagonal line through it, indicating the tab is now muted.
- To restore the sound, simply click the crossed-out speaker icon again.
Note: You can also Right-Click the noisy tab and select Mute Tab from the context menu.
How to Mute All Other Tabs at Once
If you are watching a video in your current tab, but an auto-playing ad suddenly starts blasting from a background tab, you can mute everything else without leaving the page you are on.
- Look at the URL address bar at the top of Safari.
- Click and hold (or Right-Click) the blue Speaker icon located inside the address bar.
- A drop-down menu will appear.
- Select Mute Other Tabs.
This action instantly silences all background pages, leaving only the audio in your current, active tab playing.
