How to Change the IP Address on a Mac

Managing Your Network Identity

Every device connected to a network (whether it is your home Wi-Fi or a corporate office network) is assigned a unique numerical label known as an IP Address. This address acts exactly like a postal address, allowing routers to deliver data packets (like emails and web pages) precisely to your specific Mac, rather than sending them to someone else’s iPhone or smart TV.

In almost all situations, your router handles this assignment automatically using a protocol called DHCP. You connect to the Wi-Fi, the router hands your Mac a temporary IP address, and everything works seamlessly behind the scenes.

However, there are specific situations where you need to manually change this IP address. If two devices on the same network accidentally receive the same address (an IP conflict), neither device will be able to access the internet. Alternatively, if you are setting up a home server, configuring advanced port forwarding for a video game, or connecting to a strict corporate network, you may be required to assign your Mac a permanent, unchanging “Static IP” address.

Method 1: The Quick Fix (Renewing the DHCP Lease)

If you are simply experiencing internet connection problems—perhaps your Mac shows it is connected to Wi-Fi but webpages will not load—you do not necessarily need to manually type in a new IP address. Instead, you can force your Mac to abandon its current address and politely ask the router to assign it a brand new one.

  1. Click the Apple Logo in the extreme top left corner of your screen.
  2. Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older Macs).
  3. Click on Network in the left-hand sidebar.
  4. On the right side of the screen, click on the specific connection you are using (e.g., Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
  5. Click the Details… button next to the connected network name.
  6. In the new window that appears, look at the left sidebar and click on TCP/IP.
  7. Click the button labelled Renew DHCP Lease.

Your internet connection will drop for about two seconds as the Mac negotiates with the router. It will then reconnect, usually with a fresh IP address, resolving most common network conflicts immediately.

Method 2: Assigning a Manual Static IP Address

If you specifically need a permanent address that never changes (a Static IP), you must configure it manually. Before you do this, you need to know your router’s IP address (often 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and you must choose an IP address for your Mac that no other device on the network is currently using.

  1. Navigate back to System Settings > Network.
  2. Click on your active connection (e.g., Wi-Fi) and click Details…
  3. Select the TCP/IP tab on the left.
  4. Look for the drop-down menu labelled Configure IPv4. It will currently be set to “Using DHCP”.
  5. Click the drop-down menu and change it to Manually.
  6. Three blank text fields will appear. You must fill them in carefully:
    • IP Address: Enter the permanent address you want to use (e.g., 192.168.1.50).
    • Subnet Mask: This is almost always 255.255.255.0 for home networks.
    • Router: Enter the IP address of your main home router (e.g., 192.168.1.1).
  7. Click the OK button at the bottom of the window to save your settings.

Your Mac will immediately disconnect from the network and reconnect using the specific address you mandated.

Important Warning About Static IPs

When you assign a manual IP address, you are bypassing the router’s automatic management system. If you choose an IP address (like .50) that the router later tries to automatically assign to a guest’s mobile phone, an IP conflict will occur, knocking both devices offline.

To prevent this, it is highly recommended to log into your router’s administrative dashboard via a web browser and reserve that specific IP address for your Mac’s hardware MAC address. This tells the router, “Never give .50 to anyone else; it belongs permanently to the Mac.”
