How to Stop macOS from Automatically Sorting Desktop Icons

The Relentless Grid

macOS offers several ways to view your desktop files. One of the most restrictive features is the “Snap to Grid” or automatic sorting functionality. If you have “Sort By” enabled, macOS will automatically force all your desktop icons into a strict arrangement based on name, kind, date added, or size. Every time you drag a new file to the desktop, or try to move an existing icon out of the way, the system instantly grabs it and shoves it back into the invisible, sorted grid. This completely ruins any attempt at spatial organization, where you might want to manually cluster related project files in specific corners of your screen.

Disabling Desktop Sorting

To gain complete control over your icon placement and stop macOS from automatically sorting or snapping your desktop icons to a grid, you must configure the desktop View Options.

Navigate to your Mac’s desktop (ensure Finder is the active application and no windows are covering your wallpaper). Right-click (or Control-click) on an empty space on the desktop. From the context menu, hover over Sort By. If any option other than “None” is checked (like “Name” or “Date Added”), click on None. This stops the alphabetical or chronological forced sorting. Next, right-click the desktop again and select Show View Options. A small floating window will appear. Look for the dropdown menu labeled Sort by and ensure it is set to “None.” Then, look at the dropdown menu labeled Snap to grid. If you want true, pixel-perfect free placement where icons can even overlap slightly, ensure this is unchecked or set to “None” (depending on your macOS version). Your icons will now stay exactly where you drop them.
