Emoji have fundamentally changed how we communicate on smartphones, allowing us to instantly convey tone and emotion in a text message. However, when you sit down at a fully-sized Mac keyboard to write an email or a social media post, the lack of a dedicated “smiley face” button can make inserting emoji feel unnecessarily difficult.
You do not need to search Google for “Thumbs Up Emoji” just to copy and paste the symbol. Apple has built a universal, system-wide emoji picker directly into macOS that you can summon instantly inside any application.
The Master Keyboard Shortcut
The fastest way to access emoji on a Mac is by using a hidden keyboard shortcut. This works in Microsoft Word, Safari, Messages, Mail, and almost every other application on your computer.
- Click your mouse inside any text field so that you have a blinking typing cursor.
- Press and hold the Control and Command (⌘) keys simultaneously.
- While holding those two keys, tap the Spacebar.
A small, floating window will instantly appear on your screen, packed with every single emoji supported by Apple.
How to Use the Emoji Viewer
The floating window is designed for speed.
- The Search Bar: At the very top of the window is a search bar. If you know exactly what you want, this is the fastest method. Simply type “Fire” or “Cat” and the relevant emoji will instantly appear.
- The Categories: At the very bottom of the window, you will see a row of grey icons representing categories (Smileys, Animals, Food, Activity, etc.). Clicking these icons allows you to quickly jump through the massive library without scrolling.
- Inserting the Emoji: Once you find the emoji you want to use, simply click it once with your mouse. It will be instantly inserted into your text document wherever your cursor is blinking.
The Dedicated Globe Key (Newer Macs)
If you own a modern MacBook (released in the last few years) or a recent Apple Magic Keyboard, Apple actually added a dedicated hardware button specifically for this purpose.
Look at the very bottom-left corner of your physical keyboard. On the Fn (Function) key, you will see a small icon of a Globe.
Pressing this Globe key once will instantly summon the floating Emoji viewer, completely bypassing the need for the three-finger keyboard shortcut. If pressing the Globe key does not work, go to Apple Logo > System Settings > Keyboard, and ensure the setting “Press fn key to” is set to “Show Emoji & Symbols”.
