How to Completely Disable ‘Click and Type’ (Free Formatting) in Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word includes a formatting feature known as “Click and Type.” Designed to simulate the freedom of a physical typewriter, this feature allows you to double-click anywhere on a blank area of a document page to immediately begin typing. Word automatically calculates and inserts the necessary tabs, blank lines, or paragraph formatting to align the text exactly where you clicked. While useful for creating title pages or complex visual layouts, it often leads to messy, structurally unsound documents filled with hidden formatting characters.

This guide explains how to completely disable the Click and Type feature in Microsoft Word to enforce strict, linear document formatting.

Disable Click and Type via Word Options

To prevent Word from automatically inserting arbitrary tabs and paragraph breaks when you click the canvas, you must disable the feature in the advanced editing settings.

  1. Open Microsoft Word and create a new document or open an existing one.
  2. Click on the File tab located in the top-left corner of the Ribbon.
  3. Select Options at the bottom of the left-hand navigation pane to open the Word Options dialogue box.
  4. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Advanced.
  5. Scroll down to the first section, labelled Editing options.
  6. Locate the checkbox for Enable click and type.
  7. Uncheck the box to disable the feature.
  8. Click OK at the bottom of the window to apply your changes.

Once disabled, double-clicking in the white space below your current text will no longer jump the cursor down the page. Your cursor will remain constrained to the existing linear flow of the document, forcing you to use proper paragraph breaks, margins, and alignment tools (such as Center or Right align) to structure your text.

Cleaning Up Existing Click and Type Formatting

If you have already used Click and Type in a document, disabling the feature will not remove the formatting it previously inserted. You must clean it up manually to ensure your document renders correctly across different devices.

  1. Navigate to the Home tab on the Ribbon.
  2. In the Paragraph group, click the Show/Hide ¶ button (the pilcrow icon) to reveal hidden formatting marks.
  3. You will likely see numerous arrows (indicating tabs) and pilcrow symbols (indicating hard paragraph returns) leading up to the text you placed using Click and Type.
  4. Highlight and delete these unnecessary formatting marks to restore a clean, professional document structure.
