How to Enable Safari Picture-in-Picture for Any Video on a Mac

Whether you are following a coding tutorial, watching a news broadcast, or simply enjoying a YouTube video while answering emails, having a video player permanently visible on your screen is incredibly useful. macOS includes a system-level feature called Picture-in-Picture (PiP) that detaches a video from the Safari browser window and floats it above all your other applications.

You can resize this floating window, drag it to any corner of your screen, and it will remain visible even if you switch to a completely different desktop space or open another app in full screen.

While some websites feature a dedicated, highly visible PiP button on their video players, many popular sites (most notably YouTube) actively try to hide or disable this feature to keep you locked on their page. This guide explains how to bypass these restrictions and force Picture-in-Picture for almost any video in Safari.

Method 1: The Address Bar Audio Icon (The Easiest Method)

This is the fastest and most reliable method to trigger PiP in Safari, and it completely bypasses custom video players that try to block the feature.

1. Open Safari and navigate to the webpage containing the video you want to watch.
2. Click play on the video so that audio begins playing.
3. Look up at the Safari address bar (where the URL is displayed). Because the tab is playing audio, you will see a small, blue speaker icon appear on the right side of the address bar.
4. Right-click (or Control-click) on that blue speaker icon.
5. A small context menu will appear. Select Enter Picture in Picture.

The video will immediately pop out of the webpage and jump to the corner of your screen. You can now close the active Safari window (as long as you do not close the specific tab hosting the video) and the video will keep playing.

Method 2: The YouTube Double Right-Click Trick

YouTube uses a custom video player. If you right-click once on a YouTube video, you will see YouTube’s own custom black menu, which does not contain a Picture-in-Picture option. To access the standard macOS video menu, you just need to click twice.

1. Open Safari and start playing a YouTube video.
2. Right-click once on the center of the video player. The black YouTube menu will appear. Ignore it.
3. Without moving your mouse, right-click a second time on the exact same spot.
4. The standard, white macOS context menu will now appear layered on top of the black YouTube menu.
5. Click on Enter Picture in Picture.

How to Manage the Picture-in-Picture Window

Once the video is floating on your screen, you have several controls available:

• Resize: Hover your mouse over any edge or corner of the floating video until the cursor turns into a double-sided arrow, then click and drag to make the video larger or smaller.
• Move: Click and hold anywhere inside the video to drag it to any of the four corners of your screen. It will automatically snap into place.
• Hide temporarily: If the video is blocking something important, you can drag it completely off the left or right edge of your screen. A small arrow tab will remain on the edge of the screen; click the arrow to bring the video back.
• Return to Safari: Hover over the floating video to reveal the playback controls. Click the icon that looks like two overlapping squares with an arrow pointing down. The video will snap back into its original Safari tab.
• Close: Click the “X” in the top-left corner of the floating video to close it entirely and pause the playback in Safari.
