How to Take a Screenshot on a Mac

Unlike Windows keyboards, Mac keyboards do not have a dedicated “Print Screen” key. Instead, Apple has built a powerful, system-wide screenshot utility directly into macOS, accessed entirely through a few simple keyboard shortcuts.

Whether you want to capture your entire screen, select a specific portion of a document, or record a video of your screen for a tutorial, macOS has a shortcut for it. Here is everything you need to know about taking screenshots on a Mac.

Method 1: Capture the Entire Screen

This is the most basic screenshot method. It instantly takes a picture of absolutely everything currently visible on your monitor.

1. Press and hold these three keys simultaneously: Shift + Command + 3.
2. You will hear a camera shutter sound effect.
3. A small thumbnail of the screenshot will briefly appear in the bottom-right corner of your screen. You can click this thumbnail to edit the image immediately, or simply wait a few seconds for it to disappear.
4. The screenshot will automatically save to your Desktop as a .png file.

Method 2: Capture a Specific Selected Area

If you only want to capture a specific error message, an image from a website, or a paragraph of text, you do not need to capture your entire screen and crop it later. You can select exactly what you want.

1. Press and hold these three keys simultaneously: Shift + Command + 4.
2. Notice that your mouse cursor has changed into a crosshair symbol.
3. Click and hold your mouse or trackpad, then drag the crosshair over the area you want to capture. A grey box will highlight your selection.
4. When you are satisfied with the highlighted area, release your mouse button or lift your finger off the trackpad.
5. The screenshot will be captured and saved to your Desktop.

Pro Tip: While dragging the crosshair (before you release the mouse button), you can press and hold the Space bar to freeze the size of the selection box and move it around the screen.

Method 3: Capture a Specific Window (Without the Background)

This is the cleanest and most professional way to take a screenshot. It perfectly captures a single application window (like your web browser) while adding a beautiful drop-shadow effect and completely ignoring the messy desktop background behind it.

1. Press Shift + Command + 4 to turn your cursor into a crosshair.
2. Instead of clicking and dragging, press the Space bar once.
3. Your cursor will change into a small camera icon.
4. Move the camera icon over the specific window you want to capture. The window will highlight in a light blue overlay to confirm it is selected.
5. Click the window to take the screenshot. It will save directly to your Desktop.

Method 4: Open the Advanced Screenshot App

If you have trouble remembering all these keyboard shortcuts, or if you need to record a video of your screen instead of a static image, you can open the master macOS Screenshot application.

1. Press Shift + Command + 5.
2. A translucent control bar will appear at the bottom of your screen.
3. From this bar, you can choose to capture the entire screen, a selected window, or a selected portion.
4. More importantly, the icons on the right allow you to Record Entire Screen or Record Selected Portion for video captures.
5. Click the Options menu on this bar to change where screenshots are saved (e.g., Documents folder instead of Desktop) or to set a 5-second timer delay before the picture is taken.
