How to Enable and Configure Fast User Switching in macOS

When multiple family members, creative collaborators, or technical specialists share a single Mac workstation, logging completely out of one user account to allow another person to access their files is disruptive and time-consuming. Logging out terminates background rendering jobs, closes virtual machines, discards unsaved browser tabs, and shuts down communication applications.

macOS includes a multi-session workflow mechanism named Fast User Switching. Fast User Switching allows multiple user accounts to remain simultaneously logged in with active background processes intact. Users can transition between personal and professional desktop profiles in seconds via the menu bar, Control Centre, or the Lock Screen without interrupting active workloads.

How Fast User Switching Manages System Resources

When you switch user profiles on Mac:

  • The active user’s graphical interface is securely locked behind their account password or Touch ID authentication.
  • Background processes—such as long-running video exports, large developer builds, and audio playback—continue executing unimpeded in the background session.
  • System RAM maintains active application state for all logged-in accounts, utilizing macOS memory compression to balance physical memory across active and background sessions.

Enabling Fast User Switching in macOS System Settings

To activate Fast User Switching on macOS Sonoma or macOS Sequoia:

  1. Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of the screen and select System Settings.
  2. In the left sidebar, scroll down and click Control Centre.
  3. Scroll down to the Fast User Switching section.
  4. Turn on the toggle next to Show in Menu Bar.
  5. Choose your preferred visual presentation:
    • Full Name: Displays the complete user name (e.g., Alexander Wright).
    • Account Name: Displays the short unix username (e.g., alex).
    • Icon: Displays a compact user silhouette icon, ideal for preserving menu bar space on smaller MacBook displays with screen notches.
  6. Optionally, turn on Show in Control Centre to include user switching shortcuts inside the swipe-down Control Centre tray.

Switching Between Accounts Seamlessly

Once enabled, transitioning between user sessions requires only a couple of clicks:

  1. Click the Fast User Switching icon or name in the menu bar.
  2. A dropdown menu displays all configured user accounts on the Mac. Accounts currently logged in with active sessions feature an orange checkmark or badge.
  3. Click the target user account name you wish to switch to.
  4. Authenticate using Touch ID or enter the target user account password.

The screen smoothly transitions to the new user’s personalized desktop environment, retaining all their open applications, window arrangements, and dock configurations.

Switching Users from the Lock Screen

If you step away from your shared Mac and lock the screen using Control + Command + Q or Touch ID, other users can log in without waking your private session:

  1. On the macOS Lock Screen, click Switch User located at the bottom of the display.
  2. Select your user avatar from the carousel of accounts.
  3. Enter your credentials to unlock your desktop.

Fast User Switching maximizes hardware utility on shared Macs, allowing users to collaborate efficiently while keeping personal sessions private and background workflows uninterrupted.
