The Silent Lock Screen
Windows 11 handles audio playback with a focus on privacy and power management. By default, if you are listening to music through a non-native application (like a web browser or a third-party media player) and you lock your computer screen (Windows Key + L) to step away from your desk, Windows will often automatically pause or mute the audio stream. While this prevents your coworkers from hearing your music while you are away, it is incredibly frustrating if you are trying to listen to a long podcast or ambient music while cleaning your room with the computer securely locked.
Keeping the Music Playing
To ensure your audio continues uninterrupted and stop Windows 11 from automatically pausing playback when you lock the screen, you must adjust the background app permissions and lock screen settings.
First, ensure the specific application playing the audio is allowed to run in the background. Press the Windows Key, click the gear icon to open Settings, and navigate to Apps > Installed apps. Find your media player (e.g., Spotify), click the three dots next to it, and select Advanced options. Under “Background apps permissions,” change the dropdown to Always. Next, if you are using a web browser to play audio, you must ensure the browser itself isn’t suspending the tab. However, the most definitive system-wide fix involves the registry, as Microsoft hides the universal lock-screen audio toggle. Press the Windows Key, type regedit, and hit Enter. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI. Right-click in the right pane, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, name it ShowUIOnLogon, and set its value to 0. Restart your computer to apply the change.
