The Hovering Folder Frustration
macOS includes a subtle but powerful file management feature known as “Spring-loading.” When you click and drag a file over a folder icon and hold it there for a brief moment, the folder automatically “springs” open, allowing you to navigate deep into a directory structure without ever releasing the mouse button. The speed at which this happens is governed by the “Spring-loaded delays” setting. By default, this delay is relatively short, designed to speed up complex drag-and-drop operations.
While this feature is incredibly useful for power users organizing large project directories, it can be highly frustrating for users who simply want to move files around their desktop or within a single Finder window. If you are a bit slow when dragging files, or if you simply pause to think while holding a file over a folder, that folder might suddenly burst open, completely changing your view and interrupting your workflow. If you prefer to manually open folders by double-clicking them, and you find the automatic opening behavior disruptive, you should completely disable the spring-loaded folders feature to regain total control over your file navigation.
How to Turn Off Spring-Loaded Folders
You can disable the spring-loaded behavior entirely via the Accessibility settings in macOS.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of the screen and select System Settings… (or System Preferences).
- In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and click on Accessibility.
- In the right-hand pane, click on Pointer Control (or sometimes labeled Mouse & Trackpad depending on your macOS version).
- Locate the option labeled Spring-loading delay.
- Next to this option, you will see a toggle switch (or a checkbox labeled “Spring-loaded folders and windows”). Click the toggle switch to turn it Off (or uncheck the box).
Your Mac will immediately stop automatically opening folders when you drag files over them. You can now hover a file over a folder indefinitely without the view changing, allowing you to organize your workspace at your own pace.
