How to Change the Size of Icons in the Mac Dock

The Dock is the central hub of macOS. It holds all your favorite applications, running programs, and minimized windows. By default, Apple sets the icons in the Dock to a medium size that looks good on most screens.

However, if you are using a massive 27-inch desktop monitor, those default icons might look tiny and hard to click. Conversely, if you are using a small 13-inch MacBook, large icons consume valuable screen real estate. Fortunately, resizing them takes only a few seconds.

Method 1: Resizing Using the Dock Separator

This is the fastest and most visual way to change the size of your Dock icons, as you can see the changes happen in real-time without opening any menus.

1. Look at your Mac Dock at the bottom of the screen.
2. Locate the vertical separator line on the right side of the Dock. (This is the subtle line that separates your main applications from your minimized windows and the Trash can).
3. Hover your mouse cursor directly over this vertical separator line.
4. Your cursor will change into a double-sided white arrow.
5. Click and hold your mouse button.
6. Drag your mouse UP to make all the icons larger, or drag your mouse DOWN to make them smaller.
7. Release the mouse button when you are happy with the size.

Method 2: Resizing via System Settings

If you want more precise control, or if you also want to adjust other Dock behaviors (like the magnification effect when you hover over icons), you can use the System Settings menu.

1. Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of the menu bar.
2. Select System Settings (or “System Preferences” on older Macs).
3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Desktop & Dock.
4. At the very top of the right-hand panel, you will see a slider labeled Size.
5. Drag the slider to the left to decrease the icon size, or drag it to the right to increase the icon size.

In this same menu, you can also check the box for Magnification and use the slider next to it. This creates a fun, wave-like effect where icons temporarily swell to a massive size only when your mouse cursor hovers directly over them, allowing you to keep the standard resting Dock size very small.
