If a friend comes over and asks to borrow your Mac to check their email, handing over your unlocked computer is a massive security risk. They have access to all your saved passwords, private photos, and personal documents. Furthermore, if they accidentally download a malicious file, it will permanently affect your computer.
Instead of creating a brand new, permanent user account just for a 10-minute visit, you should enable macOS’s brilliant Guest User feature. A Guest Account provides a safe, walled-off environment that automatically self-destructs the moment the person logs out.
How to Enable the Guest Account
By default, the Guest Account is usually disabled to save hard drive space. You must manually turn it on.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your screen.
- Select System Settings (or “System Preferences” on older Macs).
- Scroll down the left-hand sidebar and click on Users & Groups.
- Look at the right side of the window. Underneath your personal Admin account, you will see a profile named Guest User.
- Click the small “Info” button (an ‘i’ in a circle) next to the Guest User. (On older Macs, click the lock icon and enter your password first).
- Toggle the switch to turn ON the setting that says Allow guests to log in to this computer.
- Click Done.
How the Guest Account Works
The next time you turn on your Mac, you will see two icons on the login screen: Your normal profile, and a new “Guest User” profile.
When your friend clicks “Guest User”, they do not need a password. The Mac instantly generates a temporary, blank desktop environment for them.
- Total Isolation: The guest has absolutely zero access to your personal files, your browser history, or your iCloud account. They cannot change system settings or install permanent software.
- The Self-Destruct Sequence: This is the best feature. When your friend is finished and clicks “Log Out”, macOS instantly and permanently deletes every single file, photo, cookie, and web history the guest created.
The next time a guest logs in, they get a completely fresh, sterile desktop. It is the perfect, worry-free way to share your computer.
Limiting Guest Access (Parental Controls)
If you are allowing young children to use the Guest Account, you might want to restrict their internet access.
In the same Users & Groups menu where you enabled the account, you will see a second toggle switch labeled Limit adult websites. If you turn this on, Apple will use its built-in web filter to aggressively block the guest from visiting inappropriate websites, making it a safe temporary environment for kids.
