The iPhone and iPad are designed to automatically rotate the screen when you turn the device sideways, switching from portrait to landscape mode to provide a better viewing experience for videos, wide photos, or games.
However, this feature relies on internal gyroscopes that can easily become confused. If you are lying in bed reading an article or scrolling through social media, shifting your weight slightly can cause the screen to abruptly flip sideways, ruining your reading experience. To prevent this, you can manually lock the screen orientation.
How to Enable the Rotation Lock
Apple placed the rotation lock in the Control Centre for instant access from anywhere within the operating system.
- Open the Control Centre:
- On an iPhone with Face ID (no Home button) or an iPad: Place your finger on the battery icon in the top-right corner of the screen and swipe downwards.
- On an iPhone with Touch ID (a physical Home button): Place your finger at the very bottom edge of the screen and swipe upwards.
- Look for an icon that looks like a padlock surrounded by a circular arrow.
- Tap the padlock icon.
The icon will immediately turn white with a red padlock and arrow, indicating the lock is active. Your iPhone is now permanently locked in Portrait mode (vertical). No matter how you tilt or rotate the device, the screen will not flip sideways.
A Note on Video Apps and iPads
iPhones: On an iPhone, the rotation lock only locks the device in Portrait (vertical) mode. You cannot lock an iPhone in Landscape (horizontal) mode. However, when you open a dedicated video application like YouTube or Netflix, the app is smart enough to temporarily override the lock. When you tap the “full screen” button inside the video player, it will force the video into landscape mode, and return to portrait mode when the video ends.
iPads: The iPad offers a more versatile lock. You can lock an iPad in either Portrait or Landscape mode. Simply hold the iPad in your preferred orientation so the screen rotates to match, then open the Control Centre and tap the padlock icon. The screen will remain locked in that specific orientation until you tap the button again to disable it.
