Modern versions of iPadOS allow apps such as Safari, Notes, Mail, Files, and Pages to run in multiple independent windows and split workspaces. While opening multiple windows increases productivity, tracking which documents are open in Split View, Slide Over, or full-screen can become disorienting. Apple addresses this with “The Shelf”, a dedicated multi-window management strip that displays miniature previews of all active windows associated with an application.
What Is the Shelf in iPadOS?
The Shelf is an application-specific window switcher that appears near the bottom of your iPad display whenever an app with multiple open instances is launched or brought into focus. Unlike the global App Switcher (which shows every application running across the device), the Shelf isolates windows belonging exclusively to the currently active application.
The Shelf allows you to:
- Inspect all open instances of an app, including full-screen instances and Split View workspaces.
- Switch instantly between project documents without navigating through file pickers.
- Spawn brand-new windows directly from the shelf strip.
- Close discarded or inactive document windows cleanly.
How to Access the Shelf on iPad
Depending on your current multitasking layout and preferences, there are three primary ways to summon the Shelf:
Method 1: Tapping the Multitasking Three-Dot Icon
- Open any multi-window-supported app (such as Safari, Pages, or Notes).
- Locate the small three dots (Multitasking indicator) centered at the very top edge of the display.
- Tap the three dots. A multitasking menu appears, and the Shelf automatically slides up from the bottom of your screen, displaying card thumbnails for each active window.
Method 2: Relaunching the App from the Dock or Home Screen
If an app already has multiple windows running in the background:
- Swipe up slightly from the bottom edge to reveal the Dock.
- Tap the icon of the app you are currently using.
- The Shelf will immediately present all existing windows at the base of the screen.
Method 3: Using External Keyboard Shortcuts
If your iPad is connected to an Apple Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard Folio, or Bluetooth keyboard:
- Press Globe + Down Arrow to immediately trigger the Shelf for the active application.
- Use the left and right arrow keys to cycle through windows, and press Enter to switch.
Opening New Windows from the Shelf
To start a fresh document or open an unencumbered browsing tab:
- Summon the Shelf using any of the methods above.
- Tap the New Window (+) card located on the far right of the shelf strip.
- iPadOS immediately generates a clean, blank window instance while keeping your other sessions intact in the background.
Closing and Managing Window Instances
Leaving dozens of background documents running can clutter the shelf strip. You can close unneeded windows directly from the shelf:
- Bring up the Shelf to view all open cards.
- Swipe upward on any individual window preview card.
- The window dismisses immediately. If the document has unsaved modifications, the app prompts you to save or discard before closing.
Managing Split View Combinations on the Shelf
The Shelf also recognises and preserves complex multitasking pairings. If you have Safari paired side-by-side with Apple Notes in Split View, that combination appears on the Shelf as a single joined card preview. Tapping it restores both apps in their exact side-by-side split ratio.
Enabling Stage Manager as an Alternative
On iPads powered by Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M4) or the A12Z/A12X chips, you can also manage overlapping windows dynamically using Stage Manager:
- Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Centre.
- Tap the Stage Manager icon (a large rectangle flanked by three small windows).
- In Stage Manager mode, the classic bottom Shelf is replaced by the left-hand group strip, providing free-form window resizing and group workspaces.
