How to Add a Website Shortcut to the iPad Home Screen Using Safari

Many frequently visited web tools, project management portals, internal intranets, and web applications lack dedicated native apps in the Apple App Store. Fortunately, iPadOS allows you to pin any webpage directly to your iPad Home Screen as a standalone web clip or Progressive Web App (PWA). Pinned websites appear alongside regular App Store apps with custom high-resolution icons, launch instantly in a single tap, and in iPadOS 17 and later, run in their own dedicated application windows separate from standard Safari browser tabs.

Creating and managing Home Screen shortcuts streamlines daily workflows and optimizes multi-window multitasking on your iPad display.

Adding a Webpage Shortcut to iPad Home Screen

You must use Apple’s native Safari browser to create Home Screen web clips, as third-party browsers on iOS and iPadOS do not possess permission to generate system home screen icons.

  1. Launch Safari on your iPad and navigate to the webpage or web application you wish to save.
  2. Ensure you are on the specific landing page or dashboard you want the shortcut to open (for example, your project dashboard rather than a generic homepage).
  3. Tap the Share button (the square icon with an upward-pointing arrow) in the top-right corner of the Safari toolbar.
  4. In the share sheet menu, scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen.
  5. A preview dialogue appears displaying the web icon and title:
    • Edit Name: Webpage titles are frequently long and unwieldy. Edit the text to a concise, recognisable title (for example, shorten “GitHub: Let’s build from here” to “GitHub”).
    • Icon: Safari automatically extracts the site’s high-definition Apple touch icon or favicon.
  6. Tap Add in the top-right corner. The shortcut instantly appears on your next available iPad Home Screen grid slot.

Standalone Web App Behaviour in Modern iPadOS

Starting with iPadOS 17, websites that incorporate a Web App Manifest launch as dedicated standalone applications rather than simple Safari bookmarks:

  • No Browser Chrome: PWA shortcuts open without the URL address bar, search tools, or back/forward buttons, dedicating 100% of your iPad screen to the application interface.
  • Separate App Switcher Cards: The web app receives its own independent window card in the iPad App Switcher and Stage Manager. You can swipe between your pinned web app and Safari as two completely separate tasks.
  • Independent Cookies and Storage: Pinned web apps maintain their own isolated session storage, allowing you to stay logged into different accounts simultaneously between Safari and your Home Screen shortcut.
  • Web Push Notifications: If authorized, standalone web apps added to your iPad Home Screen can dispatch badge counters and lock screen notifications just like native applications.

Organising Web Shortcuts in Folders and the iPad Dock

Once pinned, a web shortcut behaves identically to any installed iPad application:

  1. Touch and hold the shortcut icon until all icons begin to jiggle (entering edit mode).
  2. Drag the shortcut into your iPad Dock for persistent access across all workspaces and Stage Manager sessions.
  3. Drag multiple shortcuts on top of one another to create organized workflow folders (such as Dev Tools, Client Dashboards, or Reference Docs).
  4. To delete a shortcut, simply tap the Remove (-) icon on the corner of the badge and choose Delete Bookmark. Removing the shortcut leaves your underlying browsing history and passwords untouched.
