How to Use the iPhone Built-in White Noise Generator for Sleep

Millions of people rely on ambient noise to fall asleep, mask the sound of noisy neighbors, or maintain focus in a crowded office. The App Store is flooded with hundreds of “Sleep Sound” apps, most of which are packed with annoying advertisements or demand expensive monthly subscriptions just to play the sound of rain. You do not need any of them. Apple built a high-quality, continuous white noise generator directly into the core operating system of your iPhone.

How to Find and Enable Background Sounds

Because Apple considers this a tool to reduce distractions and help neurodivergent users focus, it is hidden deep within the Accessibility settings, rather than the Music app.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
  3. Scroll down to the “Hearing” section and tap on Audio/Visual.
  4. Tap on Background Sounds.
  5. Toggle the switch at the very top of the screen to the On position.

The audio will begin playing immediately. It works flawlessly in the background, even when you lock your screen or switch to other applications.

Customizing Your Sound

Right below the main toggle switch, you will see an option labeled Sound. Tap it to reveal Apple’s six built-in, high-quality audio loops. You can choose from:

  • Balanced Noise (Standard white noise)
  • Bright Noise
  • Dark Noise (A deeper, rumbling sound, excellent for sleep)
  • Ocean
  • Rain
  • Stream

When you select a new sound for the first time, your iPhone will quickly download the high-quality audio file from Apple’s servers.

How to Add a Fast Shortcut to Control Center

Digging through the Accessibility menu every night before bed is tedious. You can add a permanent button for this feature directly to your Control Center for instant access.

  1. Go back to the main page of the Settings app.
  2. Tap Control Center.
  3. Scroll down to the “More Controls” list and look for Hearing (it has a blue ear icon). Tap the green + button next to it.

Now, whenever you want to turn on the rain sounds, simply swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen to open the Control Center, tap the blue ear icon, and tap “Background Sounds.” You can toggle the noise on and off instantly without ever unlocking your phone.
