How to Use the Built-In Hidden Trackpad on the iPhone Keyboard

Typing a long email or text message on an iPhone screen is generally a smooth experience, right until you notice a typo in the middle of a paragraph. Trying to tap your finger on the exact spot between two tiny letters to insert a missing character is an exercise in frustration. Your finger obscures the text, and the cursor almost never lands exactly where you want it to, forcing you to tap repeatedly or use the clumsy magnifying glass tool.

Fortunately, Apple solved this problem years ago, but hid the solution in a feature that is entirely invisible to the naked eye. Your iPhone keyboard actually doubles as a highly precise, virtual trackpad, allowing you to move the cursor through text with the same fluid accuracy as using a mouse on a laptop.

This guide explains how to activate and master the hidden trackpad feature on your iPhone keyboard.

How to Activate the Trackpad

To use the hidden trackpad, you must first be in a text field where the standard iOS keyboard is visible on your screen.

  1. Open any app where you type text (Messages, Mail, Notes, Safari, etc.).
  2. Tap inside the text field to bring up the keyboard.
  3. Locate the Spacebar at the bottom of the keyboard.
  4. Press and hold your finger firmly on the Spacebar.

Do not lift your finger. After roughly one second, you will feel a slight haptic vibration (a small “click” feeling from the phone), and all the letters on the keyboard will instantly disappear, leaving behind a blank, grey canvas.

How to Move the Cursor

The entire grey area where the keyboard used to be is now your virtual trackpad.

  1. Keeping your finger pressed against the screen, drag it slowly in any direction (up, down, left, right, or diagonally).
  2. Look up at your text. You will see the blue cursor moving smoothly and precisely through the characters, following the movement of your finger on the trackpad below.
  3. Once the cursor is exactly where you want it (e.g., right between the two misspelled letters), lift your finger off the screen.

The letters will instantly reappear on the keyboard, and you can resume typing or deleting characters exactly where you placed the cursor.

How to Select Text Using the Trackpad

The trackpad feature is not just for moving the cursor; you can also use it to highlight blocks of text for copying or deleting, entirely replacing the clumsy double-tap-and-drag method.

This requires a slightly more advanced gesture using two hands, but it is incredibly efficient once you master it.

  1. Activate the trackpad by pressing and holding the Spacebar with one thumb.
  2. Drag the cursor to the exact spot where you want your text selection to begin. Do not lift your thumb.
  3. While holding your first thumb down, tap the blank trackpad area with a finger from your other hand. This “drops an anchor” and tells iOS you are ready to start highlighting.
  4. Now, drag your original thumb across the trackpad. You will see the text highlight in yellow or blue as you move the cursor.
  5. When you have highlighted the desired text, lift all fingers.

The text will remain highlighted, and the standard Cut/Copy/Paste menu will appear above it.

By making a habit of long-pressing the spacebar, you will dramatically increase your typing speed and eliminate the frustration of editing text on a touch screen.
