Carrying a bulky physical wallet stuffed with plastic debit and credit cards is increasingly unnecessary in modern commerce. With Apple Pay and the built-in Apple Wallet app on iPhone, you can make contactless purchases in grocery stores, transit stations, restaurants, and inside mobile applications securely. Because Apple Pay tokenizes your payment information with unique Device Account Numbers, merchants never see your actual 16-digit credit card number or CVV code, providing far superior fraud protection compared to physical plastic cards.
How to Add a Debit or Credit Card to Apple Wallet
Enrolling a payment card takes less than two minutes:
- Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
- Tap the + (Plus) button in the upper-right corner of the screen.
- Tap on Debit or Credit Card.
- Tap Continue.
- Position your physical card within the on-screen camera frame to automatically scan the card number, expiration date, and name (or tap Enter Card Details Manually).
- Enter your card’s 3-digit or 4-digit security code (CVV).
- Read and accept your financial institution’s terms and conditions.
- Complete bank verification by entering an SMS one-time passcode or approving through your banking app.
- Once verified, your card appears rendered in full digital colour ready for immediate transactions.
How to Pay in Physical Stores Using Face ID or Touch ID
Executing a contactless purchase at checkout is seamless:
- When standing near the payment terminal, double-click the physical Side button on your iPhone (or double-click the Home button on iPhone SE).
- Your default payment card appears on the screen.
- Glance at your iPhone screen to authenticate with Face ID (or rest your finger on the sensor for Touch ID).
- Hold the top edge of your iPhone within a few centimetres of the contactless card reader.
- A subtle haptic pulse will vibrate through your phone, a gentle chime will sound, and a green checkmark will appear reading Done.
Setting Your Default Card and Swapping Cards at Checkout
Customise which card pays for your daily coffee:
- Change Default Card: In the Wallet app, press, hold, and drag your preferred card to the very front of the stack. Alternatively, go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Default Card and choose your primary card.
- Pay with a Different Card: Double-click the Side button to bring up Wallet, then tap on the stack of cards at the bottom to select an alternative rewards or corporate card before authenticating with Face ID.
Removing Expired or Replaced Cards
When a bank issues a replacement card or an account closes:
- Tap the card inside the Wallet app.
- Tap the three dots icon in the top-right corner and select Card Details.
- Scroll down to the very bottom and tap Remove Card.
