How to Schedule Messages to Send Later on iPhone in iOS 18

Composing a text message late at night when a brilliant work idea strikes, remembering a friend’s birthday that falls tomorrow morning, or drafting a reminder for family while in a different time zone frequently creates a dilemma. If you hit send immediately, you risk waking someone up or appearing inconsiderate. If you wait until morning, you will almost certainly forget to send it altogether.

With iOS 18, Apple finally introduced native message scheduling inside the Messages app with Send Later. Without using convoluted Shortcuts automations or third-party scheduling apps, you can draft an iMessage and assign an exact date and time up to 14 days in advance. Apple handles the dispatch automatically in the background even if your phone is asleep or out of cellular coverage at the scheduled minute. This guide walks you through using Send Later.

How Send Later Operates Under the Hood

Apple’s native message scheduling is integrated directly into the Apple Account cloud infrastructure:

  • Server-Side Scheduling: When you schedule a blue-bubble iMessage, the payload is held securely on Apple’s servers. The message will dispatch at the precise scheduled minute even if your physical iPhone is powered off, in Airplane mode, or out of battery.
  • Two-Week Advance Horizon: You can schedule messages up to 14 days ahead in 1-minute increments.
  • Editable Until Sent: Scheduled messages remain clearly visible in a dashed bubble at the bottom of the conversation thread, allowing you to edit text, reschedule delivery times, or delete drafts before transmission.

How to Schedule a Message on iPhone

Scheduling a text takes only a couple of taps in any active iMessage conversation:

  1. Open the Messages app on an iPhone running iOS 18 or newer.
  2. Open the conversation thread with the person you want to message (note: recipient must use iMessage).
  3. Type your message content into the text composition field.
  4. Tap the + (Plus) button located to the left of the text input box.
  5. In the apps sheet that expands, tap More, then tap Send Later (represented by a blue clock icon).
  6. A scrolling date and time picker will appear just above your keyboard.
  7. Swipe the wheels to select your desired Day, Hour, and Minute.
  8. Tap the blue Send arrow (upward arrow) to confirm.

Your message will appear in the conversation thread enclosed in a dotted blue bubble with a label reading “Send Later: Tomorrow at 09:00”.

Editing, Rescheduling, or Deleting a Scheduled Message

If your plans change before the scheduled message dispatches:

  1. Open the conversation thread containing the pending scheduled message.
  2. Tap Edit located above the dotted bubble.
  3. A context menu will present three options:
    • Send Message: Dispatches the message immediately without waiting for the timer.
    • Edit Time: Re-opens the date and time picker wheels to adjust the delivery schedule.
    • Delete Message: Permanently cancels and erases the pending dispatch.
  4. To edit the text itself: Simply tap into the text bubble, modify your wording, and tap the checkmark to save.
