How to Set App Limits Using Screen Time on Your iPhone

Smartphones are engineered to capture and hold your attention. Whether you are endlessly scrolling through TikTok, getting lost in Instagram Reels, or playing mobile games long past midnight, it is incredibly easy to lose hours of your day. If willpower alone isn’t enough to stop the scrolling, you need structural barriers.

Apple introduced Screen Time to iOS to provide precise analytics on your digital behavior. However, its most powerful feature is App Limits, which allows you to enforce strict daily time quotas on your most addictive apps. Once you hit the limit, the iPhone actively locks you out.

How to Access Screen Time Data

Before you restrict an app, it is helpful to know exactly how much time you are wasting on it.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Screen Time (indicated by a purple hourglass icon).
  3. Tap on See All App & Website Activity.

Here, you will see a detailed bar chart of your daily usage. Scroll down to the “Most Used” section. You might be shocked to discover you spent three hours on YouTube yesterday. This data tells you exactly which apps need limits.

How to Set an App Limit

You can set limits on entire categories (like all social media) or specifically target individual apps.

  1. Return to the main Screen Time menu.
  2. Tap on App Limits.
  3. Tap Add Limit.
  4. A list of categories will appear (Social, Games, Entertainment).
    • To limit a whole category, tap the circle next to it (e.g., tap “Social” to limit Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram combined).
    • To target a specific app, tap the small arrow next to the category name to expand it, and select only the apps you want (e.g., expand “Social” and select only “TikTok”).
  5. Tap Next in the top right corner.
  6. Use the scrolling wheel to set your daily time allowance (e.g., 0 hours and 45 minutes).
  7. Optional: Tap Customize Days if you want different limits on the weekend. You could allow 2 hours of gaming on Saturday, but only 30 minutes on weekdays.
  8. Tap Add in the top right corner to save the rule.

What Happens When You Hit the Limit?

If you set a 45-minute limit for TikTok, the app will function normally for the first 44 minutes of the day. At the 40-minute mark, your iPhone will send you a polite banner notification warning you that you have 5 minutes remaining.

When the 45th minute strikes, the app will instantly lock down. The screen will turn white, displaying a large hourglass icon and a “Time Limit Reached” message.

If you exit to your home screen, the TikTok app icon will appear dimmed out, and a tiny hourglass symbol will appear next to its name.

The “Screen Time Passcode” Loophole

By default, when you hit a limit, Apple gives you an easy out. At the bottom of the “Time Limit Reached” screen, there is an “Ignore Limit” button. Tapping it allows you to snooze the limit for 15 minutes, or ignore it for the rest of the day.

If you lack discipline, you will inevitably hit “Ignore” and keep scrolling, rendering the entire system useless.

To fix this, you must lock the settings with a passcode.

  1. Go to Settings > Screen Time.
  2. Scroll down and tap Lock Screen Time Settings (or “Use Screen Time Passcode” on older iOS versions).
  3. Enter a 4-digit PIN. Crucially: Do not use your phone’s normal unlock PIN. Ideally, have a trusted friend or partner secretly type in the PIN for you.

Once the passcode is set, go back into your specific App Limit (e.g., TikTok) and ensure the toggle for Block at End of Limit is turned ON.

Now, when the 45 minutes run out, the “Ignore Limit” button will require that secret 4-digit PIN to proceed. If you don’t know the PIN, it is technologically impossible to open the app until the timer resets at midnight.
