When you capture a Live Photo on iPhone, the Camera app records a 1.5-second snippet of video and ambient sound before and after the shutter is pressed. While this creates vibrant, dynamic memories, background audio frequently captures unwanted ambient distractions—such as wind howling into the microphone, accidental coughs, background conversations, or traffic noise.
If you intend to convert the Live Photo into a looping video, share it on social media platforms, or send it to friends, you do not need to convert it into a static still picture to silence it. iOS includes a native audio mute toggle within the Photos editing suite that strips the audio track while preserving the fluid visual motion.
Muting Audio on an Individual Live Photo
To silence the audio track on any existing Live Photo:
- Open the Photos app on your iPhone.
- Locate and tap the Live Photo you wish to silence.
- Tap the Edit button in the top-right corner of the display.
- Tap the Live Photo icon (concentric circles) in the bottom toolbar.
- Look at the top-left corner of the screen. You will see a yellow speaker icon.
- Tap the yellow speaker icon. A diagonal slash will appear through the speaker, and the icon will turn grey, signifying that audio is disabled.
- Tap Done in the top-right corner to save your changes.
When you press and hold the photo to play its motion, or when you export it as a video clip, it will play completely silently.
Restoring Audio to a Muted Live Photo
Because iOS photo edits are entirely non-destructive, the underlying sound data is never permanently discarded:
- Open the muted Live Photo and tap Edit.
- Tap the concentric Live Photo icon at the bottom.
- Tap the grey speaker icon in the top-left corner to restore the yellow active state.
- Tap Done.
Exporting Muted Live Photos as Clean Silent Videos
If you want to upload the moving image to platforms that do not natively support Apple’s Live Photo format (such as WhatsApp, Slack, or Instagram Stories), tap the Share button on the muted photo and select Save as Video. iOS renders a crisp, high-definition video file in your camera roll without any background audio noise.
