How to Turn On the Magnifier on an iPhone

Whether you are trying to read the tiny, microscopic text on the back of a medicine bottle, or attempting to inspect a tiny splinter in your finger, human eyes sometimes need assistance. Instead of hunting for a physical magnifying glass, you can turn your iPhone into a powerful digital magnifier.

While you could simply open the Camera app and zoom in, Apple has built a dedicated “Magnifier” tool specifically for this purpose. It includes specialized features like colour-inversion, brightness boosting, and the ability to freeze the frame so you do not have to hold your hand perfectly still.

How to Enable the Magnifier Shortcut

Because you usually need a magnifying glass instantly, the best way to use the tool is by linking it to the physical buttons on the side of your iPhone.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
  3. Scroll down to the “General” section and tap on Accessibility Shortcut.
  4. You will see a long list of features. Find Magnifier and tap it so a blue checkmark appears next to it.

You have now programmed the physical side button on your phone.

How to Use the Magnifier

Whenever you need to read something tiny, simply triple-click the physical Power button on the right side of your iPhone (or the Home button, if you have an older iPhone model). The Magnifier app will instantly launch.

Key Features:

  • The Zoom Slider: At the bottom of the screen, you will see a yellow slider with a magnifying glass icon. Drag the circle to the right to zoom in. The iPhone will seamlessly switch between its multiple camera lenses to give you the sharpest possible image.
  • The Torch: If you are reading a menu in a dark restaurant, tap the small Flashlight icon. This turns on the camera flash permanently to illuminate whatever you are looking at.
  • The Freeze Frame: This is the most useful feature. If your hands are shaking, trying to read a zoomed-in image is impossible. Point the camera at the tiny text, get it into focus, and tap the large, circular Shutter button in the middle. This takes a temporary, high-resolution photo. You can now lower the phone, hold it comfortably, and zoom in on the frozen image. (This does not save the photo to your Camera Roll; it simply freezes the Magnifier screen).
