Communication accessibility is one of the most powerful aspects of modern mobile technology. With the introduction of Live Speech in iOS 17 and later, Apple allows iPhone users who are non-verbal, experiencing vocal strain, or recovering from speech impediments to type what they wish to say and have their words vocalised out loud through their device speakers. Live Speech functions seamlessly across in-person daily conversations, cellular voice calls, and FaceTime video chats, transforming written text into natural spoken dialogue with a quick triple-click.
Key Capabilities of Live Speech
Live Speech goes beyond simple text-to-speech tools by integrating directly into core iOS communication frameworks:
- System-Wide Voice Output: Live Speech works during live telephone calls, FaceTime chats, and third-party assisted communication apps without needing external accessories.
- Personal Voice Integration: If you have created an artificial synthesised replica of your natural voice using iOS Personal Voice, Live Speech can vocalise your typed phrases using your own recorded vocal timbre.
- Saved Favourite Phrases: You can store frequently spoken greetings, responses, emergency instructions, and ordering requests for instant one-tap playback.
- Triple-Click Accessibility Shortcut: Live Speech can be summoned or dismissed instantly from any lock screen or app by triple-clicking the Side button.
How to Enable Live Speech on Your iPhone
To turn on Live Speech and configure your preferred vocal synthesiser, follow these steps:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone running iOS 17 or later.
- Scroll down and tap Accessibility.
- Under the Speech section, tap Live Speech.
- Toggle the switch next to Live Speech to the green On position.
- Tap Voices to select your preferred audio dialect, tone, and speech rate. You can choose from enhanced Siri voices, classic accessibility voices, or your personalised voice profile if configured.
How to Create and Organise Favourite Phrases
Typing lengthy sentences during a fast-paced conversation or checkout counter exchange can cause uncomfortable delays. Setting up saved phrases enables instant verbal responses:
- Within Settings > Accessibility > Live Speech, tap Favourite Phrases.
- Tap the + (plus) icon in the upper right-hand corner of the display.
- Type your frequent expression, such as “Hello, I use an assistive device to speak” or “Could I please have a flat white with oat milk?”
- Tap Save to confirm. Repeat this process for any essential greetings, medical notices, or family messages.
- Tap Edit in the top corner whenever you wish to reorder or delete existing expressions.
Using Live Speech in Daily Conversations and Calls
Once enabled, using Live Speech in everyday situations is swift and intuitive:
- Triple-click the physical Side button (or the Home button on iPhone SE models).
- A compact Live Speech floating text card will appear over your current screen or lock screen.
- Tap into the text field, type the sentence you wish to communicate, and tap the blue Send arrow button on the on-screen keyboard. Your iPhone will immediately speak the words through the loudspeaker or into your phone call audio stream.
- To speak a pre-recorded statement, tap the Phrases category tab above the keyboard and select your desired sentence for instant vocal delivery.
- When finished, swipe downward on the Live Speech card or triple-click the Side button once again to dismiss the interface.
