How to Disable the Voice Dial Feature on iPhone

The Lock Screen Telephony Vector

iOS includes a legacy accessibility and convenience feature known as “Voice Dial.” By default, even if your iPhone is completely locked with a complex alphanumeric passcode or Face ID, a user (or a malicious actor) can press and hold the side button to activate voice control and command the phone to dial any number or contact in your address book. While designed for hands-free driving, it is a catastrophic physical security vulnerability. An attacker who steals your locked phone can use Voice Dial to call premium-rate numbers, execute social engineering attacks against your family, or extract the phone numbers of your emergency contacts. You must permanently sever the operating system’s ability to execute telephony commands while locked.

How to Disable the Voice Dial Feature

You can permanently paralyze the lock-screen telephony daemon via the Face ID & Passcode settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode).
  3. Enter your device passcode to authenticate.
  4. Scroll down to the section labeled “Allow Access When Locked.”
  5. Locate the toggle switch labeled Voice Dial.
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Absolute Physical Security

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely sever the software connection linking the lock screen interface to the telephony and voice control daemons. If an unauthorized user attempts to trigger Siri or Voice Control while the device is locked, the operating system will absolutely refuse to process any command related to making a phone call until the cryptographic passcode is successfully entered. Your address book and cellular modem remain strictly isolated, guaranteeing absolute operational security against physical tampering.
